Even though manager Greg Lewis' squad finished in third place in the four-team league during the regular season, it won three straight games in the post-season and captured the play- off championship. "Defense and clutch hitting" were the keys to Team Impact's title, accord- ing to Gary Klinger, athletic chairman for the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region and Team Brotherhood manager. Team Zeiger, managed by Rick Sherline, won the regular-season championship with a 13-7 record. Team Brotherhood (11-9), Team Impact (10-10) and Team Pisgah (6-14) rounded out the standings. It was a short post-season for Team Zeiger, which lost 14-9 to Team Pisgah and 16-4 to Team Brotherhood and was quickly eliminated from the dou- ble-elimination playoffs. Meanwhile, Team Impact beat Team Brotherhood 10-7 and Team Pisgah 14-6 to earn a berth in the champion- ship round. Team Brotherhood edged Team Pisgah 5-4 to earn a shot at Team Impact, but Team Impact stayed per- fect in the post-season and won the playoff title with a 9-2 victory over Team Brotherhood. Ahead 3-2 over Team Brotherhood, Team Impact tacked on six insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Also on the Team Impact roster were Greg Franco, Seth Gorback, Scott Berger, Mike Sokolowski, Robert Wittenberg, Gregg Schultz, Lee Isenberg, Mike Feld, Leo Gillerman, Brook Morris, Marc Weiss and Ryan Weiss. Also on the Team Brotherhood roster were Dale Taub, Mike Klinger, Nathan Cohen, Seth Goldman, Steve Dines, Adam Goldman, Matt Brand, Iry Kriszenfeld, Jason Miller, Russ Young, Brad Hantler, Alex Tapper, Randy Otis, Matt Kash and Jonny Goldberg. This was the 42nd year for the B'nai B'rith softball league, and even though it was the second consecutive season with just four teams, nobody was com- plaining. "It was a competitive league. Anybody could have won the champi- onship:' Klinger said. "We'd rather have four good teams with people showing up to play each week than eight teams with weak teams and teams forfeiting" League games were played Sunday mornings at Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield. The playoffs stretched over two weeks. Cagers Rebound Down by 19 points to Atlanta in its first game at the JCC Maccabi Games in Austin, Texas, the Detroit U14 boys basketball team staged a valiant come- back but lost by one point. Undaunted, and against some of the tournament's top teams, Detroit bounced back to beat Fort Lauderdale and Austin before losing to eventual champion Los Angeles. Dean Hysni was Detroit's leading scorer and Jordan Machlis was the top rebounder. Rick Kaczander and Larry Sherman were the coaches. Help Wanted Mark Weiss is looking for hockey play- ers. The coach of the Frankel Jewish Academy Jaguars is putting together a Midget B team for players born in 1997 and 1998 that will play in the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League under the auspices of the Farmington Hills Hockey Association at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena. While players don't have to be a Frankel student or Jewish to be on the team, the team will not play or practice on Shabbat or a Jewish holiday. This is the team's second year. It played at a tougher Midget BB level last year, with nine of 17 players Frankel students. Prospective players should contact Weiss at (248) 444-5155. ❑ Send news to sports@thejewishnews.com.
