We Must Teach History Of Israel To Our Youth The letter "Supporting BBYO Ensures Jewish And Israel Survival" (Sept. 5, page 3) hit the nail on the head when it pointed out that Jewish youth are not prepared to deal with the anti-Israel propaganda on college campuses. Various orga- nizations are working to address the problem, but the real Israel educa- tion problem starts at home. The baby boomers growing up in the '50s and '60s still had the end of World War II and the birth of the Jewish state on their minds. The Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War were very real to us, and we all knew that Israel was "David" in a world of "Goliaths." In the past 40 years, Israel has become the Goliath in many people's minds, and the Palestinians have become the poor Davids. In the process, knowledge of the struggle involved in Israel's found- ing has been lost. Too many of the present generation take Israel's exis- tence for granted or don't care. The Palestinian propaganda has been very effective. School text- books, in many cases, help spread the Palestinian narrative. Our schools teach their students that they are people of the world, not proud American citizens, in too many cases. Then there is the idea of moral equivalency where there is no right or wrong. If we are to positively impact our youth, we need to influ- ence their parents and grandparents with pro-Israel education and a little pride so they can pass the message on. We need to consider if Israel and Jewish history are well presented in our Jewish day schools and Hebrew schools. When was the last time present- day Israel was mentioned in a rabbi's sermon? How many recent Hollywood movies portray Jews and Israel in a favorable light? Are our community leaders and the institu- tions they represent protecting us? Unfortunately, I believe we are frogs in a pot of slowly boiling water, and the majority of Jews aren't at all aware that the temperature is rising. Will we hop out before it's too late? Because history does repeat itself, we better start learning our own his- tory so we can be part of the solution to ensure that our kids, grandkids and all of Israel can have a bright future. We can't afford to repeat the relative silence of our American Jewish community during WWII. Eugene Greenstein Farmington Hills Correction In "Liquid Gold" (Aug. 29, page 40), Jeff Binder was misquoted.
