Jews Must Condemn Islamists Killing Christians Coptic Christians are being mas- sacred by Muslim Brotherhood sup- porters in Egypt, while President Obama and his administration say virtually nothing. Yet, when Israel wanted to build residences for the burgeoning Jewish population, Obama and his adminis- tration immediately condemned the action and subsequently sent money to Gaza. Since Israel's founding, many members of the Christian community have stood up and strongly supported Israel and continue to do so today as Israel is being besieged on every side by its Islamic neighbors and rocketed by Hamas. Where is the like support from the Jewish community for the Christians being massacred by the Muslim Brotherhood? There is a saying that they will first come for the "Saturday" people [Jews] and then for the "Sunday" people [Christians]. Well, since the Saturday people are no more in Egypt, they have come for the Sunday people. Where are the Jewish groups like Jewish Voice for Peace who claim to be for "peace" in the Middle East, but condemn only Israel — never Islamic terrorists like the Muslim Brotherhood and their offshoot, Hamas. Where are the voices of the so-called "moderate" Muslims, who often are invited to the Obama White House and have prominent positions in the State Department? American Jews have prided themselves on supporting religious freedom and tolerance. It is time for the Jewish community to loudly condemn the massacre of Christians by Islamists in the Middle East, including the Brotherhood (who the administration supported in Egypt), and to pressure this administration to do likewise. Irving Ginsberg, Ph.D. Farmington Hills Supporting BBYO Ensures Jewish And Israel Survival I want to tell you how happy and thrilled I was to see the full page ad in the Jewish News regarding BBYO (Aug. 22, page 4). I attended an event in April in Boca Raton, Fla., at our synagogue, Beth Ami, on behalf of BBYO. We were told that in spite of the fact A ■ 11. Richard Kaplan prepares for the High Holidays The Jewish News is planning an article about the non-cash economy. 1Ik Marc 4 If you use a business trading network or barter for business services, please contact Story Development Editor Keri Guten Cohen at kcohen@rennnedia.us to tell your story. : The High Holy Days are a time of personal reflection and meditation. For Richard Kaplan, it is a time to join with his that Hillel-The Foundation of Jewish Campus Life, Stand With Us, AIPAC and other Jewish organizations are trying to do the best job they can to keep our youth involved in pro-Israel causes, unfortunately, the results are not very good. A student representing Hillel attended the event. He told us that Arabic students and misinformed American students held anti- Israel rallies at the Florida Atlantic University all week. I asked him how many Jewish students attended on behalf of Israel; he told me that it was, unfortunately, less than a dozen. To the best of my knowledge this university has thousands of Jewish students. I was shocked, saddened and dismayed by the lack of interest of Jewish students to stand up for Israel. The speaker of this event implored us that we must start instilling Zionism and the love of Israel in Jewish children way before college. He told us that we must spend more resources for BBYO. It is extremely important to do that before they go to college. BBYO has been around for a very long time, but it seems to me that it was a low priority for the Jewish community to strongly support BBYO. The Detroit Jewish community has been in the forefront with its strong support of Israel. I sincerely hope that we will make BBYO a top priority for supporting Israel and for Jewish survival. David Kahan Bloomfield Hills Pollard's Term Unjust Compared To Manning's "Biggest U.S. spill of classified infor- mation draws stiffest penalty," said the Associated Press news article in the Detroit News regarding Bradley Manning. By what standard of justice do they measure his sentence? Thirty-five years with eligibility for parole in seven is a walk in the park compared to Jonathan Pollard's life sentence with no mercy. Considering that Pollard leaked information to an ally and not to the public or hostile nations, as did Manning, one of these sentences is grossly out of proportion one way or another. Our government has yet to explain what Pollard did that deserves continued incarceration while it demands the release of Palestinian terrorists who murdered women and children. Why is our community silent in the face of these latest examples of unequal justice for Jews? Are our edi- tors too consumed with the problems of Detroit to remember the plight of one of our own?
