She said she and her hus- band were regular volunteers at Camp Oasis, a summer residential camp for children with IBD. That chance meeting reinforced for Fried, himself an IBD conqueror, why he hosts an annual charity ride to sup- port research and camp programs as well as heighten awareness on behalf of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. He hopes to ultimately raise a cumulative $100,000 for the CCFA. "It is bad enough for an adult to struggle with the chronic pain and debilitating symptoms of these ill- nesses, but even more so for a child:' Fried said. The 73 participants and volunteers raised more than $11,000. The 8.4-mile course meanders around Kent Lake, along a rolling, wooded, paved trail. The official event is three laps, or 25.2 miles, but partici- pants choose their distance. Since its 2008 start, the charity ride has generated at least $73,000 for the CCFA. Fried, a West Bloomfield CPA, is motivated not just by his lofty fundraising goal, but also by a desire to empower IBD sufferers to chal- lenge themselves at his event. "I hope participants experience, even to a lesser agree, the sense of accomplishment I felt after completing my first long-distance trek seven years ago, a 215-mile weekend ride:' he said.
