OPENING MEETING

Israel and American foreign
policy.
Closer to home, the city of
Detroit declared bankruptcy,
while city services continued
to decline. Wayne County came
under the shadow of potential
fiscal default as well as the real-
ity of federal investigations of
a web of admitted and alleged
corruption. Unemployment fell
but not nearly enough, while
social service programs for
the needy and vulnerable con-
tracted.
But there were steps forward
in 5773 that promise progress.
Downtown Detroit continues to
sparkle with the announcement
or completion of one develop-
ment project after another,
including entertainment and
sports venues, hotels, housing
and Downtown-based new jobs.
The Jewish Federation,
the Downtown Synagogue
and other organizations and
individuals are working with
many dedicated parties to
help the city improve and
advance. Detroit Jews clearly
remain devoted to the metro
area's core city.
Further afield, following
Prime Minister Netanyahu's and
President Obama's reelections,
both leaders are now involved
in restarted Middle East peace
talks with the Palestinians.
After five years without any
substantive negotiations, all
participants are committed to
reaching a peace agreement in
nine months or less.
Here in Metro Detroit, JCRC
will grow its corps of trained
advocates who promote peace
by standing up for Israel in the
face of those seeking to dele-
gitimize the Jewish state. We
encourage those interested in
joining our advocacy network
to contact the JCRC office.
Let us as a community pray
that 5774 will be a shanah
tovah — a good year for our
entire community in Detroit
and worldwide.
