At NCJW, she first began as a children's advo- cate and chair of the Community Outreach Committee before branch- ing out to many other projects. Serving in her seventh year as a vice president of the section is Marlene Goodman of Farmington Hills. Vice presidents Jennifer LoPatin of West Bloomfield and Sandi Matz of Franklin are both beginning their fourth terms. Sandy Lada of Bloomfield Hills is starting her second year as a vice president. Corresponding Secretary Sharon Schmidt of West Bloomfield begins her second term, as does Bonnie Tucker of Birmingham in the posi- tion of recording secretary. Assistant Walk For Mastocytosis Fights Little-Known Illness The Gittleman Family (Barbara, Ted and Laura) is sponsoring their sixth annual walk for the Mastocytosis Society, in memory of their daughter and sister Sarah Gittleman, and to raise community awareness and fund research. Mastocytosis are mast cell diseases that can be life-threaten- 1 1 ing. Since it affects ( fewer than 200,000 people, patients have difficulty obtaining proper medical or Sarah other services they Gittleman need because those making the decisions are not familiar with the disease. There is no cure, and the treatment is limited to trying to control the symptoms. The Mastocytosis Society is a grass- roots organization. Marlene Goodman of Farmington Hills was given the section's most prestigious honor, the Hannah G. Solomon Award, named for NCJW founder Hannah G. Solomon. Bobbie Patt of Huntington Woods received the Ann Rubin Volunteer Award, honoring the memory of Ann Rubin, an indefatigable NCJW volunteer for more than 40 years. Leslie Moskowitz of Bloomfield Hills was named this year's Emerging Leader.
