News And Free Press Are Criticized For Ad Regarding the important Aug. 15 let- ter in the Jewish News from Zionist Organization of America-Michigan Region Executive Director Kobi Erez, "Anti-Israel Advertisement Opposes U.S. Interests" (page 5), letters were immedi- ately issued to the Detroit News and Free Press rebutting the misleading false- hoods in their advertisement. When the rebuttals were not pub- lished, the letters were followed up to both the News and Free Press with this letter: "Dear Editor, "I am very disappointed that you allowed such a blatantly anti-Israel ad in your newspaper without a rebuttal for the public to see. "Did you 'vet' the advertisers? If you did, you would have seen only anti- Israel bias, no even-handed discussion regarding both parties in the Middle East dispute. "Your journalistic behavior is irre- sponsible and questionable!" Israel and the Jewish people are under assault everywhere in the world, and it is imperative that we stand up against these assaults. What are you doing to stand up for Israel and the Jewish people? Ed Kohl West Bloomfield Whose Side Are We On Anyway? Blood oozes down the streets of Syria and Egypt. Homemade videos from Syria show women and children pre- sumably poisoned from chemical weap- ons. The thrown-out-of-power Muslim Brotherhood burns Christian churches and kills Coptic Christians in the streets. Yet, President Obama and his admin- istration remain silent in the presence of rampant horrors in the Mideast. We abandoned Iraq, sent drones throughout Afghanistan and never said a word about leaders of Iran threatening Israel with annihilation. Yet, Secretary of State John Kerry, as a start to the "peace process!' was able to "strongly pressure" Israel to release 26 Palestinian terrorists convicted of murdering inno- cent Israelis, demanding nothing from the Palestinians. Among the released was Al-Haaj Othman Amar Mustafa, a Palestinian convicted in 1991 of killing U.S. citi- zen and former U.S. Marine Frederick Steven Rosenfeld. How is that for American justice? U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf wouldn't comment if the convicted murderers were "freedom fighters" or terrorists. She answered repeatedly, "I do not have a position on that." No position? Whose side are we on anyway? What is the right term for pushing our one democratic ally to release con- victed murders while saying nothing about the horrific bloodshed in the lands of its neighbors? An American shandeh. Your Legal Issues Yiddish Limerick Arnie Goldman Farmington Hills Young Detroiters Shine As MDA Volunteers Few communities around the world can boast of so many young adults volun- teering for Magen David Adorn (MDA), Israel's emergency medical, ambulance and blood services agency. As MDA is not government funded, it relies on donors and volunteers from around the world to fulfill its mission of saving lives in Israel. Kol Hakavod [all the respect] to these young adults for volunteering and to their parents, friends and families for encouraging (and funding) their participation. A huge thank you to Contributing Editor Robert Sklar for his article (Aug. 15, page 12) sharing the efforts of these 47 volunteers and that they will be hon- ored at the Dr. John J. James Chapter- Michigan Region of American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) Annual Event on Sept. 22 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. Proceeds from the event will help sponsor three or more ambulances for the Central Galilee, Michigan Jewry's partner region. The first has all 47 vol- unteer names listed on the passenger doors and the next two will show school pride — Go Blue! and Go Spartans! MDA needs 100 new ambulances this year, and ambulances must be fully funded before they may be freighted to Israel. To make your contribution to the ambulances, now, so that we may show- case them at the event, and for event reservations, call (877) 405-3913 or go to www.afmda.org/mames-event. Cari Margulis Immerman AFMDA Director Clarification • "Over The River" (Aug. 1, page 10) reported that Windsor's Congregation Shaarey Zedek was holding services in the chapel at Congregation Shaar Hashomayim because its building closed in 2012. To be more specific, the Shaarey Zedek building in Windsor suffered a flood, and the congregation has not yet determined if it will eventually move back to it or pursue another option.
