am often asked by trade publica-
tions to identify the "new trends"
in landscaping. What I have
noticed most recently is a much big-
ger effort of tying the outside of the
home to the inside; a blending of the
boundary.
We have collaborated with an
increasing number of interior
designers to ensure that the view and
feeling from inside the home moves
effortlessly to the outside, recogniz-
ing that the view is a fundamental
part of a room's ambience. But it is
more than the view that is changing.
As we remodel, update and expand
our homes, outdoor living spaces
have become a critical part of the
overall plan.
Retrofitting an existing home once
meant combining the kitchen and
family room. Today we are more
often asked to bring kitchen and
entertaining areas outside.
The patio has taken on a liv-
ing room look with design ele-
ments once reserved for the inside,
including stylish furniture built to
withstand the elements, interesting
new textiles, lighting and fireplace
features. These new living areas are
flanked by built-in grills or fully
equipped outdoor kitchens that cre-
ate a complete and functional casual
entertaining area or retreat, right
outside the door.

When our landscape designers meet
with you to discuss your landscape
project, they begin by asking questions
about how you intend to use the space.
Each element in the design will be part
of a deliberate environment that not
only reflects your style and the archi-
tecture of your home, but will also
serve the function of the space.
A Ceiling Made Of Sky
A couple I know looks forward to that
moment every evening when they have
returned from work and can spend
some time together to unwind and
engage with each other in their new
outdoor living space. This backyard
area is treated like an extension of
their home, "a room with a ceiling
made of sky."
Genevieve Gorder of HGTV says,
"Design is really powerful, and we
all have that emotional nerve in
there that gets hit when something
is fixed. Space is a powerful thing
when it's done right. It makes you
live better and live more happily."
Great design matters. When
projects are installed over time, the
design provides "the map" to where
you are going with each phase. Each
finished project becomes part of
a whole, well-conceived idea that
blends together seamlessly to wel-
come you home. ❑
