im Small, one of three
judges serving the
48th District Court, is
considering a 2014 run for the U.S.
Senate.
The Washington Post reported
that Small visited representatives of
the National Republican Senatorial
Committee in July about the seat
being vacated by retiring Democrat
Carl Levin.
U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Detroit),
whose district includes portions
of Oakland and Wayne counties, is
expected to receive the Democratic
Party nomination.
According to the newspaper,
Small is tight with Republican
Gov. Rick Snyder and the party's
donor community, and is being
taken seriously by the Senatorial
Committee.
Currently, the only declared
Republican candidate for the seat is
former Secretary of State Terri Lynn
Land. High-profile Republicans,
including Congressmen David
Camp (R-Midland) and Mike
Rogers (R-Lansing), have
announced they will remain in the
House and not pursue their party's
nomination. Land is receiving only
tepid support from state Republican
leaders, according to various media
accounts.
Small was unable to comment
on her interest or intentions, citing
her current position as a sitting
judge. If she formally announces
her intent to run for the seat, she
would need to resign from the
bench. Republican Party sources
believe she will make a decision by
the middle of September.
The 48th District serves
Bloomfield and West Bloomfield
townships, Birmingham,
Bloomfield Hills, Keego Harbor,
Orchard Lake and Sylvan Lake.
