MARSHALL SILVERMAN, 76, of

Oak Park, died Aug. 21, 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice
Silverman; daughters and son-in-
law, Laurie and Sean Dare of Oak
Park, Terri Silverman of Ferndale,
Brenda Silverman of Troy; sister and
brother-in-law, Barbara and Charles
Whitefield; many loving nieces and
nephews.
Contributions may be made to Yad
Ezra, 2850 W. 11 Mile Road, Berkley,
MI 48072; or to a charity of one's
choice. Interment was held at Clover
Hill Park Cemetery in Birmingham.
Arrangements by Hebrew Memorial
Chapel.

LARRY STEIN, 83,
of Farmington Hills,
died Aug. 21, 2013.
After graduat-
ing from Central
High School
(1947) and Wayne
State University
(B.A. chemis-
try), he served in the U.S. Navy in
Waukegan, Ill. While in the Navy,
he was awarded the Meritorious
Mast Award. He then completed a
B.S. in pharmacy at Wayne State
University (1957) and became a reg-
istered pharmacist and an adjunct
instructor of pharmacy (Wayne State
University). After retirement, he
enjoyed working at Keller Williams
and volunteering at William
Beaumont Hospital.
Mr. Stein was a devoted friend and
family man.
He is survived by his beloved wife,
Bea Stein of Farmington Hills; sons
and daughter-in-law, Steven Stein of
Pekin, Ill., Gary and Monique Stein
of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; daughter and
son-in-law, Sharon and Daniel Meyer
of Wilmette, Ill.; daughter-in-law,
Marilyn Ripson; brother-in-law, Dr.
Sheldon (Phyllis) Stoffer; grandchil-
dren, Eric (Aimee) Stein, Melissa
Meyer, Marc Meyer, Ariel Stein, Dava
Stein, Aliyah Stein; many loving
nieces, nephews, other family mem-
bers, friends and caregivers.
Contributions may be made to
the Parkinson Foundation, Jewish
Senior Life or the Friendship Circle.
Interment took place at Machpelah
Cemetery in Ferndale. Arrangements
by Dorfman Chapel.

MELVIN SUHD, formerly of Detroit,

died Aug. 2, 2013.
He was born Dec. 8, 1924, in
Detroit; and he graduated from
Central High School just as the
United States was entering World
War II. He joined the military as

Division. He
participated in
the Battle of the
Bulge and was
one of the first to
liberate Dachau
Concentration
Camp on April 29,

1945.
Mr. Suhd earned a teaching cre-
dential from Wayne State University.
His public school classrooms inte-
grated children with learning and
other disabilities in the late 1950s.
He taught at Paul L. Best School,
Roosevelt Lab. School, Lesley-Ellis,
Pacific Oaks, U.C.-Berkeley, Cal-State
Northridge, Laurence University and
Eastern Michigan University.
A Ph.D. student at UCLA in the
1970s, Mel, with his colleagues,
developed a theory of pluralistic
education. He was responsible for
the first Head Start classrooms in the
country. He also started one of the
first external-degree programs with
Goddard College, which let college
students develop their own educa-
tional curricula and gave them credit
for their life experiences.
Mr. Suhd was involved in the
humanist psychology movement. He
started a religious organization, the
Association for the Integration of the
Whole Person (AIWP), as a way to
promote both his notion of human-
ism and his desire to expand the goal
of lifelong learning. He founded/
established the original University
Without Walls, Antioch West, Sierra,
Summit and the University for
Integrated Learning, from which he
retired in 2005.
A committed social justice activist,
Mr. Suhd walked with Martin Luther
King Jr. in Selma and in Washington,
D.C., and was with Ceasar Chavez
in Modesto, Calif. He participated
in many anti-Vietnam war rallies
and protests, which culminated
in a 20-day jail stint for blocking
the doors at the Oakland Army
Induction Center.
Mr. Suhd is survived by his chil-
dren, Glenn, Mike (Kate Kausch) and
Lauren (Wally Brondstatter); grand-
children, Jennifer Suhd-Brondstatter,
James Aura-Gullick and Jordan Aura
Gullick; sister, Flora Hommel; her
daughter, Claudia.
He was preceded in death by his
former wife, Sunny (Yetta) Varner
(nee Weinman).
