It was the buzz of kazoos — played by children who marched around the park, following Ben Opengeym play- ing his accordion. Opengeym, direc- tor of the JCC's Russian-Jewish Life Department, was in snappy orange shoes as he lead the kazoo players in "Hava Nagila" just before opening ceremonies. The new park/playground, cre- ated with a grant from the Jewish Fund and other donors, celebrated its official opening last week at the JCC in Oak Park. Hundreds of residents from throughout the area attended the event, which included refreshments for everyone, games, a petting zoo and plenty of time to play. Various dignitaries attended: Oak Park Mayor Marion McClellan, mem- bers of the Oak Park City Council, Jewish Federation President Douglas A. Bloom and JPM Committee Chair Malka Torgow, who called the event the "culmination of a great dream:' Malka Torgow of Oak Park, JPM committee chair, cuts the ribbon to officially open the play area as her granddaughter Shaina Krakauer, 4, of Oak Park watches. The dedication began with a short opening ceremony. JCC Executive Director Mark A. Lit praised Assistant Executive Director Leslee Magidson for spearheading the new park, which he described as "a safe, wonderful intergenerational playground that Oak Park can be so, so proud of:' Everyone was then invited to visit stations set up all around the park. There was ice cream and a donut race where children placed their hands behind their backs and tried to eat a donut hanging from a white string (a RSVP BY THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2013 OPEN SEATING `FOR INFORMATION (248) 203-1483 OR `E-MAIL: XATZ@JFMD.ORG ONLINE 'REGISTRATION WWW.JEWISHDETROIT.ORG/JWF The Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit is dedicated to expanding opportunities and enriching the lives of Jewish women and girls through strategic grant making and education.
