International Law Doesn't
Require Two-State Solution
Some people, including me, expect
the Bible's great prophetic promises
to the Jewish people to be kept. So
I wasn't thrilled by the American
Jewish Committee's Kenneth Bandler's
characterization of that as a "pipe
dream" ("No Alternative to Two-State
Solution," Aug. 8, page 30). Nor by his
claim that international law forbids
the return of the Jewish people to the
Holy Land.
That's a dubious proposition. As a
lawyer, I personally think, along with
many scholars, that international
law doesn't stand for anything of the
kind.
Indeed, as we see it, the specific
statutes of the Geneva Convention
and U.N. Charter, which are said to be
determinative, were written intention-
ally to encourage, not prevent, the
cause of God to succeed.
Someone like Mr. Bandler, who sup-
posedly represents the Jewish people,
could presumably serve us better than
by adopting the arguments of those
who hate us or want the Jewish cause
on Earth to fail.
Another point of law: If the Jewish
people of any generation, through
our representatives in Israel, willfully,
permanently deed away the heart of
the Promised Land to a foreign, hos-
tile nation, that would be a significant
repudiation — one might say, a cos-
mically resonant rejection — of the
Jewish mission.
With all the news about extreme
Jews on both left and right, we believe
that many Jews — commonsense peo-
ple and people of faith, one not being
exclusive of the other — will never
consent to the blandishments of Mr.
Bandler. If history teaches us anything
about the God of Israel, it's that He
favors those who seek to fulfill, not
renounce, the ancient Biblical cause
of Israel.
One last point: Mr. Bandler argues
that, absent this two-state "land for
peace" solution, Israel must grant full
electoral suffrage to enemy nationals
who oppose the basic nature of the
Jewish state. But why he thinks so is a
puzzle. No law requires it.
Two Jewish Filmmakers
Side With Israel's Enemies
We Jews have become so comfortable
and so cosmopolitan that some of us
think it's no big deal when Jewish film-
makers take the side of our enemies.
From their descriptions, the two
documentary films, 5 Broken Cameras
and The Law in These Parts, sound
like typical anti-Israel fare, but they
are heavily praised in the Jewish News
(Aug. 15, page 49).
Both films seem to show how
Palestinians face difficulties due to
the Israeli separation barrier and an
inconsistent Israeli legal system. But
shouldn't we recall why Israel built the
barrier?
Wouldn't an honest filmmaker admit
that since its construction it's saved
hundreds or even thousands of lives,
both Jewish and non-Jewish? And what
would the legal system in Judea and
Samaria be like had the surrounding
Arab nations accepted the "two-state
solution" back in 1948 — or any of the
other times it has been proposed?
How would Palestinians be living
if their children were learning useful
skills instead of terrorism and Jew-
hatred in U.N.-sponsored schools?
If the world treated Palestinians like
people instead of "refugees"? If we
expressed outrage at their demand of
a Judenrein [German for "cleansed of
Jews"] Palestine instead of negotiating
more forced removal of Jews?
In order to join the We-Hate-Israel
Club, both filmmakers (based on the
reviews) use the common propaganda
technique of ignoring context and
history in order to present Israel in a
negative light.
It should be the mission of a Jewish
newspaper to expose these kinds of
malicious films, not give them glowing
reviews for technique while neglecting
the content.
And it is important for us to remem-
ber that it is not a barrier, whether wall
or fence, or an inconsistent set of laws
that trouble the Palestinians.
Rather, it is the fact that there are
Jews; even worse, Jews who are living
freely in a country that they built prac-
tically from scratch. We forget that at
our peril.
U.S. Aid For P.A.
But Not For Detroit
In a rapidly expanding Arab village
in the Shomron (West Bank) near
Yitzhar, the United States Agency for
International Development is spending
$50 million to give the village a new
water tower.
That means, of course, more land and
dollars for the village.
Since the village, like most of the
rest, is under the Palestinian Authority,
the Israeli government does not inter-
fere.
The P.A. receives billions of dollars and
euros every year from the U.S. and E.U.
governments.
The P.A. pays a "martyr's salary" to
families of suicide bombers; Arab terror-
ists in Israeli prisons and their families are
given generous stipends.
But there's little or no money to help
U.S. citizens in one of the most impor-
tant cities in America to find solutions?

Where Is The Outrage Over
Muslims Killing Christians?
Where is the outrage from American
Jews — and others — about what is
happening in Egypt?
The Muslim brotherhood is system-
atically burning Christian churches
and businesses and killing and humil-
iating Christian clergy.
Once they have "cleansed" Egypt of
Christians, who do you think they will
come after next?
Why do the Jews cower when it is
a fact that we are hated in the Arab
world?
Where are men and women of cour-
age who would speak up?
I don't hear anything from our rabbis.
There are no warnings from our politi-
cians. We are, once again, complacent in
the face of imminent danger.
If someone tries to speak out, to try
to get Jews to arm themselves or to form
protest groups to fight back against
terrorism, he is snickered at and pro-
claimed to be a kook.
We need to stop pretending that Israel
will be OK and that our government will
defend Israel and us.
Wake up, Jews, before it is too late.
