Jacob Silver jewish@edu writer S tand Out Live Original. These words mean more than just a simple slogan slapped on a T-shirt. SOLO Detroit is a new men's and women's street wear clothing company founded on the idea of liv- ing to do what you love. Co-founded by me, my brother Zachary Silver, a senior at Central Michigan University, and Jacob Leider, a recent Michigan State University graduate, SOLO Detroit began during the summer of 2011 with the hope of one day becoming a nationally recognized company that empowers its customers to live originally without compromising their fashion sense. The message is simple: Stand Out and Live Original, meaning do not conform to society's norms and do what makes YOU happiest. During the past two summers, my brother and I both had the privilege of experiencing Israel for the first time through the joint MSU Hillel and Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. While both trips (in different years) were experienced through different perspectives, we agreed on how much of an impact the trip made on our lives. We each brought back ideas and philosophies learned during our short time in the Homeland. For me, it was an eye-opening experience. The feeling of being thrown into a situation with 39 complete strangers, learning to accept and love everyone for who they are and where they come from is something I will never forget. For my brother Zachary, the most meaningful part of the trip was being able to meet so many new people, all while seeing historical sites that have such a deep meaning to the Jewish culture. Israel changed our perspective on life for the better, and we can't wait to go back. One common theme of the Taglit-Birthright Israel trip is giving back to people who otherwise might not get to experience the great things Israel has to offer. As a company, SOLO Detroit feels strongly about giving back to the community we live in, which is why we are an active sponsor of the nonprofit Detroit Heidelberg Project. Having collaborated on a sweatshirt, where portions of proceeds from all sales were donated to this amazing organization as well as spending time cleaning up houses Downtown, we wish to set a great example for young Detroiters looking to make a difference in their community. @ Jacob Silver of Birmingham is a sophomore at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. SOLO Detroit clothing can be found at Double Up in Birmingham, East Lansing and Ferndale as well as Funky 7 in Royal Oak, and SHE of Bloomfield Hills and Grosse Pointe.
