Q: How do you see Oakland posi-
tioned in relation to the other
nearby large public universities:
Wayne State, Michigan State, U-M
and Eastern?
Kramer: I think Oakland follows
U-M and Michigan State. We need
more awareness in southern Oakland
County.

Q: What proportion of undergradu-
ates complete their degree within
five years?
Kramer: Forty-two percent, although
that figure is reduced by students who
transfer to other colleges. We want
to do better through more screening
of incoming students. We have a new
dean of student affairs. Increasing
the head count isn't our goal. We are
focused on graduation and employ-
ment.

Q: What is the status of the Oakland
University William Beaumont
School of Medicine?
Kramer: The school is entering its
third year with 75 students. There will
be 100 in the next class. In the first
year, 50 percent of applicants came
from Michigan and the next year that
had changed to 25 percent so more
students from other places are aware
of the school. Not all of the applicants
are from Oakland University; they are
of national caliber.

Q. When the school was established,
tuition was supposed to be free. Is
that the case now?
Kramer: Tuition is $40,000 per year.
Funding for the medical school comes
from Oakland and Beaumont Hospital,
which provides all of the clinical train-
ing. The curriculum is designed to
train physicians who are empathetic
toward patients.

Q: Is there a significant Jewish pres-

ence on campus?
Kramer: It is growing with the medi-

cal school. A minor in Jewish stud-
ies is offered and there is a Jewish
student organization that is affiliated
with Hillel of Metropolitan Detroit.
(According to Brett Willner, Hillel's
coordinator for Oakland University,
Jewish students on campus are esti-
mated at 100 to 200 or more. The
Jewish student organization sponsors
education programs, holiday celebra-
tions, community service and Sabbath
meals.)

Q: What are some other recent
achievements?
Kramer: Research is a high goal
because it helps to recruit better teach-
ers and students. We have increased
our involvement with Chrysler.
(Chrysler Headquarters is located
in Auburn Hills, near the Oakland
University campus.) There are sum-
mer internships there for business,
engineering and chemistry students.

Q: What are some of the university's
strongest programs?
Kramer: Nursing, physical therapy,
engineering and, of course, the medi-
cal school. We have two programs
operating in Macomb County, which
does not have a four-year university
based there. The School of Education
has a program for autistic children —
OU Cares.
Oakland has some foreign students,
including 160 Chinese students, many
studying engineering.
