or a kid whose mother
thought he was going to be a
third-grade dropout, David
Feldman has done very well for him-
self.
Growing up in Chicago, school
didn't come easy for Feldman. As a
youngster, he had major challenges in
reading and was once so embarrassed
and humiliated at being moved down
a reading level that he didn't even tell
his parents. Undeterred, Feldman
eventually hunkered down and has put
together a wonderful career as an edu-
cator.
Feldman arrived in the Detroit area
in 2012 to take over as headmaster
at Roeper School in Bloomfield Hills.
Roeper, soon to celebrate its 75th
anniversary, is one of Metro Detroit's
top private schools and boasts a 100
percent rate of its graduates going to
college, according to Feldman.
A graduate of the University of
Wisconsin, Feldman attended a Jewish
day school as a child, but graduated
from a public high school. His road to
the classroom, let alone to his current
position at Roeper, took some interest-
ing turns. He became a teacher at first
only to pay for law school, and then it
happened. He was hooked on children

and the opportunity to help them help
themselves.
"I would not have loved the law, not
in the way I love working with chil-
dren:' he said.
Feldman is a great believer in
what the founders of Roeper School
(Holocaust survivors George and Anna
Mae Roeper) espoused, that "education
does not prepare you for life, but is life
itself:'
He believes that too often teachers
are more worried about content than
educating, and he points out there
is a major difference in the two. At
Roeper School, he says, "It is about
the whole child and not just academ-
ics, but social and emotional education
as well:'
At Roeper, students are on a first-
name basis with their teachers and
administrators. Feldman feels this sort
of casual approach is key in breaking
down formalities and paving the way
for better communication. Students at
all levels are exposed to the benefits
and joy of community involvement
from grades PreK-12.
"David Feldman has been a great
addition to Roeper," said Paula
Romano, a lower school teacher. "He
is very approachable, calm and a good
listener. He and his wife, Elayne, have
plugged into the community and made
this their home. I'm excited about his
