Canine to Five is a way to "combine
my love of animals and passion for my
hometown into a career: said Blondy,
daughter of a Temple Israel family.
She's a staunch advocate for
Detroit's resurgence through her net-
working group, Open City Detroit.
It encourages entrepreneurship and
offers "initiatives to foster a strong,
grassroots business community:
said Blondy, noting that CEO "Dan
Gilbert's decision to move Quicken
Loans Downtown has been great for
our business:'
Now in her fifth year of arranging
Drinking With Dogs events, also pro-
moted on Facebook, Blondy welcomed
Ferndale residents Ariana Baseman
and her "mutt" Echo at the packed
July 25 event held at Como's. The
humans ate pizza, sipped beverages
and commented on each other's ador-
able pets.

"We're having fun: said Baseman,
adding that she's brought dogs to
similar nights at Rosie O'Grady's Irish
Pub in Ferndale and Pronto Video Bar
in Royal Oak.
For Pronto, Dining With Dogs is an
occasional "special event" (last held
July 30) on its back patio. Otherwise,
dogs must be tied up to the outside
railing when their owners eat on the
Washington Street-side patio.
By contrast, dog-friendly Rosie's
offers a "Pooch Patio" with separate
entrance. Ferndale dog owners "are
super-excited that they can take their
dogs out for a walk and come here to
have lunch, dinner or drinks: said
events manager Cheryl Hunnicut.
Drinking With Dogs will return 6-9
p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22.
For customers who don't want ani-
mals around, she added that "signs
are posted informing that we can seat
you on the front patio and, of course,
inside."
