N EXTGen Detroit and Temple Beth El hosted Summer Jam on July 11 at the Bloomfield Township synagogue. The event benefited nonprofit organizations Humble Design and Mitzvah Meals. The crowd of about 120 enjoyed cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, good company and live music featuring Collision Six Band. The event was coordinated by co-chairs David Colman, Steve Craig, Ryan Fishman, Aaron Lowen, Liz Modell, Treger Strasberg and Jordon Wertheimer. "A great team of Temple Beth El's young leaders came together to make this event an inspiring success," Fishman said. "Being part of a synagogue is about more than just going to services, it's about philanthropy and com- munity, and this event speaks to the exciting developments at Beth El" Final tallies are not in yet, but each nonprofit organization will receive a minimum of $1,000. F riends of the IDF (FIDF) Michigan Chapter hosted an intimate brunch with Avi Dicter, the former head of Shabak (Shin Bet), the internal general security service of Israel, on July 21 at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield. Dicter gave an overview on the current situation in Israel and the Middle East. "I felt like I was at home Dicter said. "Detroit's lay leaders made an atmosphere of family and unity, and having my local relatives [the Gun family of West Bloomfield] with me further empowered that feeling:" Dicter is a former Israeli minister of public security, minister of homefront defense and former director of Shin Bet. He was a mem- ber of the Knesset from 2006-2012 for the Kadima Party, but then joined Prime Minister Netanyahu's inner security cabinet until the elections of 2013. As a young member of our Jewish commu- nity, I believe it is important we get involved as early and often as possible," said FIDF sup- porter William Slatkin of Birmingham.
