T

hree eighth-graders par-
ticipated in the July 28
Wish-A-Mile (WAM) 50-mile
bicycle tour to benefit the Make-A-
Wish Foundaton of Michigan. Ryan
Zalla, 13, and Ben Cooper, 12, both
of Bloomfield Hills, and Courtney
Newman, 12, of West Bloomfield rode
50 miles on behalf of Team Alex.
Each of the students, who attend
Bloomfield Hills West Hills Middle
School, participated in WAM as part
of their mitzvah projects for their
upcoming b'nai mitzvahs.
Through their efforts, they helped
Team Alex raise more than $330,000
and helped Make-A-Wish raise more
than $2 million to help grant wishes
to children with life-threatening med-
ical conditions.
Courtney first presented the idea to
her longtime friends, who were more
than excited to join her. Her parents
were going to participate in the WAM
fundraiser, and thought it would be
fun to join in. Her parents recruited
their friends, too.
"My mom and dad took me every
year to Disney World for winter break:'
Ryan said. "That was the first time I
learned about Make-A-Wish.
"I knew one day I wanted to help
make other kids' wishes come true.
Participating in the event with my
mom and friends is how I spent the
weekend of my 13th birthday:'
Ryan trained with his mom over

three months by participating in local
spin classes and by biking outside
with his father.
"It is important to me that my kids
understand how fortunate they are,
and learn the value of giving back to
others and the community:' Julie Zalla
said.
"Each of these friends of mine feel
the same:'
Also participating in the WAM
50 were adults Gary Cooper and
Molly Chernow, both of Bloomfield
Hills; Joel Tarnopol, Marcy Newman
and Tracy Naftaly, all of West
Bloomfield; and Leslie Brown and
Jodi Michaelson, both of Huntington
Woods.
Ron Bittker, Marcy Spitz and Alan
Newman, all of West Bloomfield, com-
pleted the 300-mile, three-day WAM
tour.
Participants ended by riding their
bikes on the Michigan International
Speedway in Brooklyn. Then they
were given medals by their Wish Hero
Sophie Blumberg of Farmington Hills.
Tarnopol says, "It was all worth it
after we crossed the finish line and
were given medals by Sophie, the girl
who will be one of the benefactors of
our charity efforts. Her beaming smile
made it all worthwhile!"
Courtney Newman adds, "We had so
much fun! We want to do it again next
year, and get even more of our friends
and family involved:'
