Young Adult Power Israel emergency service cites student volunteer supporters. I Robert Sklar Contributing Editor I srael's national medical, disaster relief, ambulance and blood services agency will honor the 40 local young adults who have spent recent summers volun- teering for it by dedicating an ambulance in their honor. Magen David Adorn also will dedicate ambulances in celebration of the univer- sities most of them have attended: the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. The dedications will take place at the American Friends of MDAs Dr. John J. Mames Chapter-Michigan Region annual dinner on Sunday, Sept 22, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Southfield. One ambulance will feature the names of the young adult honorees. The other two emergency vehicles will showcase the colors of U-M and MSU, hence the Go Blue! and Go Green! door cheers. The Mames chapter has initiated a campaign to fully fund the three ambu- lances and unveil them at Shaarey Zedek before they are sent to Israel. They will be stationed in the Central Galilee, Michigan Jewry's partner region. In a highlight of the evening, the Mames chapter for the first time will dedicate a motorbike, also bound for the Central Galilee. The three-wheeled unit can carry equipment, maneuver into tight spaces and allow triage before ambulance support arrives. "When our young adults become trained volunteers for Israel's emergency response teams, they add to the MDA vol- unteer corps, riding on ambulances with paramedics, participating in helping those in need and often helping MDA save lives:' said Cari Immerman, Michigan Region director. MDA has 1,300 professionals on staff and 13,000 trained, card-carrying volunteers. The "Celebration of Life" event at Shaarey Zedek also will honor the MDA supporters sponsoring the local fund- raising campaign: Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg, the estate of Rosalie Kaufman, and Natalie and Manny Charach. Manny chairs the 2013 Ambulance Campaign Steering Committee. Natalie is a vice chair along with Libby Newman. "We are so pleased to be honoring these young adults and recognizing their fami- lies as well; Manny said. "Our chapter has been committed to Magen David Adorn and its lifesaving work since 1967; now, new generations are making commit- ments as well. We need to make sure the organization, which is not government funded, continues to receive our support now and well into the future" The Mames chapter has raised more than $22 million over the years for such MDA basics as bulletproof vests, para- medic scholarships and defibrillators. It has donated 240 ambulances. A basic life support ambulance costs $100,000 and a mobile intensive care unit is $125,000. "It has never been a more crucial time to represent the future of Detroit and the state of Michigan through the donation of these three ambulances:' said Eden Adler, 20, a U-M junior from Farmington Hills and a 2012 MDA volunteer. The aspiring medical student added, "I hope that our names inspire more young adults to volunteer with Magen David Adorn and further serve as a reminder of the strength and heart in our Jewish com- munity here in Detroit and beyond" ❑ The ambulance dedication is at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375 Bell Road, Southfield. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 in the main foyer and sukkah. The program and dinner follow. Dinner tickets start at $118. All proceeds will go to the ambulance campaign.
