Healthy P Recipe Wins Boy A Trip To White House p arents have a hard enough time getting their kids to eat healthy, but if a trip to the White House is what it takes, bring on the carrots. West Bloomfield resident Sarah Hirsch and her son, Jacob, 8, entered the nationwide Healthy Lunchtime Challenge sponsored by Epicurious.com, an informational cooking website, the White House and First Lady Michelle °bands Lets Move! initiative. The challenge was to create a lunchtime recipe that is healthy, affordable, original and delicious, according to a White House press statement. The goal of the challenge was to pro- mote healthy eating among America's youth. The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge recognized 54 of the 1,300 entries. There was one winner from each state and one winner from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and Washington, D.C. "Yay, we get to go to D.C.!" Jacob said when he found out he was a winner. "I hope we meet the president:' Jacob's favorite food is pizza, so he and his mom created a healthy alternative called Picky-Eater Pita Pizza Pockets. "My son loves pizza so we thought we would enter the con- JN CONTENTS test using a food he enjoys:' Sarah said. "We used whole-grain pita pockets and made our own sauce with a lot of vegetables hidden inside. Jacob doesn't like vegetable chunks so we hid them under lots of mozzarella cheese:' The first lady hosted a lunch, which included nine of the 54 winning recipes and a surprise visit from President Barack Obama. The Obamas met and took photos with each family. "Our Kids' State Dinner is one of my favorite events of the year, and the kid chefs who come from around the country never cease to impress and inspire me with their creativity and ingenuity:' First Lady Michelle Obama said in a press release. Aside from lunch with the Obamas, the competition also included a tour of Julia Childs' kitchen at the Smithsonian and of the White House gardens, led by the Obamas' personal chef. There was a party for the kids where they created self- contained gardens filled with toys that were donated to the local Ronald McDonald House. A healthy pizza party followed the philanthropy event. Sarah and Jacob extended their trip to tour the historic dis- trict of Washington, D.C., but their favorite part was being at the White House. ❑ theJEWISHNEWS.com August 8-14 2013 I 2-8 Elul 5773 I Vol. CXLIV, No. 1 Around Town 16, 20 Arts/Entertainment ...35 Business Memos 24 Calendar 21 40 Food 10 Here's To 26 Home Israel 22, 30, 34 Letters 5 Life Cycles 44 45 Marketplace Metro 8 PRESENTS Jacob and Sarah Hirsch at the White House Leslie Spector JN Intern Next Generation 29 Obituaries 50 Points Of View 30 Sports 43 Staff Box/Phone List ...6 Synagogue List 32 Torah Portion 33 World 34 Shabbat: Friday, Aug. 9, 8:24 p.m. Shabbat Ends: Saturday, Aug. 10, 9:28 p.m. SCHOOL PALOOZA FUNDRAISER FEAT. v1/111SYAHU WWW.MATISYAHUWORLD.COM u(OF001 baiROOM 1 SOUTH SAGINAW POEM MI 48342 SEFEENBER 2, 2013 DOORS-5.30PM I SHUN-7.00PM CONTACT ADL FOR Tam Call 248.353.7553 or by email at jwine©adl.org . $100 for VIP Meet & Greet $35 for General Admission A portion of the proceeds to benefit ADL Michigan Region COMMUNT- Shabbat: Friday, Aug. 16, 8:14 p.m. Shabbat Ends: Saturday, Aug. 17, 9:16 p.m. 100 p k prae Times are according to the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah calendar.
