Israeli culture and history through
dance and song.

srael's young goodwill ambassa-
dors made their annual summer
appearance in Ann Arbor and
at both Detroit Jewish Community
Centers in July. Each year, a new group
of talented Israeli teens travels across
North America during the summer as
part of the Tzofim Friendship Caravan.
Four Caravans tour the country,
bringing Israeli culture, music, dance
and a message of peace through lively,
interactive performances.
Each group consists of five girls and
five boys, all age 17, plus two Caravan
leaders. They come from all over
Israel and are members of the Tzofim
(Scouts), Israel's first Zionist youth
movement, which now is the coun-
try's national youth movement. The
selection process to become part of a
Caravan is highly competitive. Scouts
are chosen based on maturity, fluency
in English and performance skills.
"The selection process is interest-
ing because your singing and dancing
skills are the last thing the judges look
at when choosing the Scouts:' said
