Campers from the Charach-Sheruth Village are ready to cut the ribbon on
the renovated village lodge.

Special to the Jewish News

T

he new Charach-Sheruth
Village at Camp Maas in
Ortonville was dedicated on
June 30. Local philanthropists Natalie
and Manny Charach decided to kick
off Tamarack Camps first master plan
to rebuild Camp Maas over the next 10
years by renovating Sheruth Village in
memory of their daughter, Janice, who
was a Sheruth camper.
The Charachs and their guests were
greeted by the Charach-Sheruth camp-
ers and staff standing on the Charach-
Sheruth Lodge porch holding a red
ribbon and singing camp songs.
"Our goal is to give you a wonderful
experience at camp in a village that
promotes community and friendship,"
Manny Charach told the campers.
"We are so thrilled to be a part of this
and to help create the pilot village for
future renovations"
Sheruth Village was originally built
and dedicated by the Sheruth League
in 1959. The Sheruth League was a
group of women who came together
to form a service organization. Their
purpose was to improve the lives
of underprivileged Jewish children
including sending them to camp. The
Sheruth League disbanded in the late
1970s, leaving a legacy of providing
Jewish camping experiences as well
as creating a home for generations of
young campers.
After the ribbon cutting, everyone
moved inside where Lee Trepeck,
Camp Maas director, led a discussion
with campers and staff who spoke
about how much the new facilities
mean to them.

Rachael Pleasant, village supervisor,
spoke about her journey from being
a Sheruth camper and staff member
to being the current supervisor of the
newly named village. "I feel so hon-
ored to be selected to supervise this
village and to be the one to help carry
on past traditions and create new ones
in this special community," she said.
She also thanked the Charachs for
their dedication and commitment to
camp and ensuring a strong Charach-
Sheruth legacy.
The staff sang a special song about
the Charach-Sheruth Village and Eli
Rockowitz, director of Jewish pro-
gramming at Camp Maas, led a mezu-
zah dedication ceremony to conclude
the program. There was a dessert
reception, and then guests were able to
visit one of the new cabins.
The renovations include porches,
built on each cabin, offering an inti-
mate gathering place; improved venti-
lation and air flow; enlarged counselor
area to provide a higher staff-to-camp-
er ratio per bunk; new wooden bunk
beds with new mattresses, donated by
Serta; and wooden shelves with lots of
storage. The Charach-Sheruth lodge
now includes a patio and new supervi-
sor housing.
In addition, local artist Gail Kaplan
will be working with the second ses-
sion Charach-Sheruth campers to
create a glass mosaic to be displayed
in the lodge. The mosaic is being dedi-
cated by Beth and Jonathan Lowe and
Deena and Stuart Lockman in honor
of the Charachs and in memory of
Janice Charach.
