New citizens, wearing patriotic hats, celebrate the end of their JFS citizenship course.

Celebrating Citizenship

JFS helps older adults and those with low English skills through its citizenship classes.

n July 2, Jewish Family Service
celebrated the graduation of
10 individuals from the JFS
citizenship class. This is the culmination
of a nine-week course that met for three
hours, three days per week.
"I am always amazed," says Perry
Ohren, CEO of JFS. "They learn things
like who is my state senator, what is

the Bill of Rights and why does the
Constitution exist."
The ceremony began with the stu-
dents stating the Pledge of Allegiance
and singing the national anthem. In
attendance were State Rep. Ellen Cogen
Lipton, (D-Huntington Woods), Oak
Park Mayor Marian McClellan, Barbara
McCallahan from U.S. Sen. Debbie

Stabenow's office, as well as JFS staff
and board members. The class targets
older adults and people with low English
skills. Since the program began in 1997,
close to 900 individuals have graduated
from JFS citizenship classes. Of these

students, 98 percent went on to pass the
U.S. citizenship exam.
