Made In Detroit New TV cop series explores hometown murder and corruption. Suzanne Chessler I Contributing Writer ow Winter Sun, a television police series caught up with the idea of second chances, travels the streets of Detroit as its setting. Behind the scenes, a show developer and actor agree that the city, in need of a second chance, stands as the appropriate place for the theme. The first of 10 episodes airs at 10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, on cable channel AMC as an adaptation of a British miniseries of the same name. The star of the British series, Mark Strong, plays Sun's Frank Agnew, a Detroit detective who has killed a fellow officer and is trying to keep it hidden. J 1942 Detroiters react to bankruptcy, the future. L ongtime Detroiters and relative new- comers to the city alike have high hopes for a town that once was a world leader in manufacturing and the auto- motive industry. They speak almost collectively of a Detroit "renaissance," and of wanting to be part of the city's comeback. This sentiment comes from those who have lived in the city for 50 years and from those who moved there last year, some as part of Jewish community ini- tiatives to bring a younger generation home. Though Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr filed for bankruptcy protection on July 18 against $18 billion of debt and unfunded liabilities, these city dwellers — and many in the suburbs — believe the city is worth fighting for. The JN spoke with five Jewish residents of Detroit about why they live in the city and what they love about it. The speculate on how bankruptcy will affect Detroit and give their thoughts on the city's future. See their stories on page 8. Jeremy Gold, who oversees scripted series for Endemol Studios, and Alon Aboutboul, an Israeli-born actor who portrays a Greektown gangster in a recurring role, discussed the program with the JN during phone conversations from California.
