The 54-year-old cancer survivor from West Bloomfield won his sixth Michigan Senior Olympics gold medal in weightlifting with a bench press of 315 pounds at the Rochester Athletic Club. "Before that lift, I don't think I had tried to bench press 315 pounds in 25 years, not even during work- outs" said Ellis, who set a Senior Olympics record for the 198- pound weight class in the men's 50-59 age division and broke his own "middle-age" personal best of 300 pounds achieved in Jeff Ellis January 2012. The 315-pound bench press also earned Ellis the title of top overall lifter at the Senior Olympics based on a system that includes weight class and amount lifted. There were about 20 competitors. While those numbers are important, what's even more important is Ellis has been cancer-free for 31/2 years. He suffered from colon cancer and under- went two complicated surgeries. The certified public accountant received his latest clean bill of health in April at the Cleveland Clinic. Ellis has used his story to convince those who haven't done it to start undergoing a regular colonoscopy. He's won five of his six Senior Olympics gold medals since the cancer diagnosis, and he said he plans to keep adding to his gold medal collection. "I don't have any restrictions in my workouts" he said. "I can see myself competing for several more years if I can avoid injuries. I really enjoy the competition" Ellis was a champion weightlifter at Michigan State University, but he stopped competing shortly after he graduated when he began his career as a CPA.
