BRINGING BACK THAT
NEW CAR FEELING

Collection drive will benefit local
Marine and his shipmates.

riends and supporters of
Jordan Leitson, 23, gathered
at RDK Maintenance in
Commerce Township on July 14 to
collect toiletries and other goodies to
make life more enjoyable for Leitson
and his fellow Marines aboard the
USS Carter Hall, now deployed in the
Middle East.
Leitson, a lance corporal with the
United States Marine Corps for the
last two years, graduated from West
Bloomfield High School. He is a mem-
ber of the Amphibious Ready Group
26th Marine Expeditionary Unit
(MEU), whose mission is to transport
Marine personnel, landing craft, vehi-
cles and cargo and then launch them
using landing craft and helicopters in
support of military or humanitarian
operations.
Leitson is a tank crewman who
passed through Parris Island, S.C., for
Marine combat training, tank school at
Fort Benning, Ga., and is stationed at
Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He's
been with the MEU since March.
His parents, Jackie and Marc Leitson
of West Bloomfield, last saw their old-
est son in November. They send him a
care package every month, consisting
of treats and toiletries as well as items
to pass the time, like DVDs, books and
games.
"When the guys get downtime,
they're stuck on the ship with nothing
to do:' says Jackie, who adds that ship-
ping the packages can be expensive.
Each package can cost $25-$50 to send.
That's why they were so touched
when Jen and Ryan Kuchciak, owners
of RDK Maintenance, offered to put
on the benefit for their son and his
shipmates. "It will make a big differ-

ence," says Jackie, who is out of work
with health problems.
RDK Maintenance is a family-
owned, full-service grounds mainte-
nance company, where Jordan worked
part-time before joining the Marines.
Each year, the company does some-
thing for the community, such as a
canned food drive. This year, they
decided to support Jordan.
"He's our friend," says Jen Kuchciak,
"and we would do anything for the
troops.
"They work long hours and spend
extended periods of time away from
their families to fight for the free-
doms that allow us to enjoy freedom
and our way of life," she adds. "We
decided to show our support by send-
ing care packages to help them feel a
little more at home:'
The July 14 open house lasted from
1-5 p.m. and featured food, drinks
and fun, including a bouncy house
for the kids and an activity area for
drawing pictures, making cards and
writing letters for the troops.
The Kuchciaks collected 51 boxes of
nonperishable snacks, toiletries and
other goodies to brighten the days of
those serving on the USS Carter Hall
during the event. They also collected
money to defray the cost of shipping
and to purchase items not received in
the donation boxes.
Jordan, known to his shipmates as
"Jew Bear," is the sole Jewish Marine
