Heartland Health Care Center Comprehensive skilled nursing and rehabilitation services Experience Makes a Difference. Steve Stein I Contributing Writer D r. Larry Sills lost his life Aug. 16, 1987, on Northwest Airlines Flight 255 when the airplane crashed on takeoff at Detroit Metropolitan Airport en route to the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif But thanks to his family, his memory lives on in a benefit golf outing that bears his name — the Dr. Larry D. Sills Memorial JCC Golf Classic. This year is the 20th annual outing for the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit's Send a Kid to Camp Fund. The outing will be held Aug. 19 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville. The fund provides scholarships for fami- lies who want to send their children to one of the myriad of camps offered by the JCC, but are having difficulty affording it. "The scholarships are based strictly on financial need' said Paul Braker, the JCC's director of special events and fundraising. Over the last 10 years, Braker said, the outing has raised $1.6 million for scholar- ships. Last year, nearly $400,000 in scholar- ships were provided by the outing and other fundraisers. Braker said the Sills family is quite active in the outing, and he appreciates their help. "They didn't establish the endowment for the outing then sit on the sidelines' he said. "They're involved 100 percent through fund- raising, making calls and playing in the out- ing. They're a dream family to work with:" Each outing honors JCC leaders in addi- tion to Dr. Sills. Terry and Martin Hollander are being honored this year. For information about the outing and donating to the Send a Kid to Camp Fund, contact Braker at (248) 432-5538 or pbarker@jccdet.org. Another good resource is the JCC web- site, www.jccdet.org. Flight 255 crashed just before 9 p.m. on that August night nearly 26 years ago. All six crew members, 148 passengers and two motorists on Middlebelt Road were killed. The only survivor was 4-year-old passenger Cecelia Cichan Crocker. 3 - On - 3 Hoops Basketball is a year-round sport at the JCC in West Bloomfield. The Kenny Goldman Basketball League presented a 3-on-3 tournament earlier this month and 10 teams participated, five in the 14-and-under age group and five in the 35-and-over age group. The winning team in 14-and-under was Chizitere Nwaopara, Carl Bow and Collin Demes. Steve Nowak, Chris Byron, Scott Menser and Michael Abraham were on the champion 35-and-over team. The champs received cash prizes. Runners-up also were given prizes. Each team in the tournament played at least three games, and teams could have as many as four players on their roster. Another 3-on-3 tournament has been scheduled for Sept. 22. Teams must register by Sept. 19. Divisions for 12-and-under, 14-and-under, 17-and-under, 18-and-over and 35-and-over are offered. The Kenny Goldman League has four seasons — fall, winter, spring and sum- mer. There are divisions for 6-and-under, 8-and-under, 10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under, 17-and-under and ages 18-20. The summer season started July 8, but registration for the fall season will begin Aug. 1 with a player evaluation scheduled for Sept. 15. An early-bird discount ($30 off) is available until Sept. 15. Practices will begin Sept. 29. For questions about the tournament and league and to register, call Bruce Wineman at (248) 432-5498 or Leah Worthy at (248) 432-5404. Welcome To Hockeytown One of the newest members of the Detroit Red Wings is Jewish. Stephen Weiss, a free agent center who signed a five-year, $24.5 million contract July 5 with the Red Wings, spent his entire NHL career with the Florida Panthers before coming to Hockeytown. Weiss may be familiar to Detroit hockey fans, and not just because he'd been with the Panthers since 2001. The 30-year-old Toronto native was a star with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League before the Panthers selected him as the fourth pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Weiss has 145 goals and 249 assists in 645 NHL games. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound- er holds Panthers' career records for assists and game played. ❑ Please send sports news to sports@ thejewishnews.com. 12 locations in Metro Detroit Allen Park Bloomfield Hills Canton Dearborn Heights Grosse Pointe Woods Livonia Livonia NE Oakland Plymouth Court Sterling Heights West Bloomfield Marvin and Betty Danto Health Care Center 800.800.CARE IChooseHeartland.com Get ready for the most spectacular Mitzvah ever!
