H

illel Day School eighth-
graders went on their annual
school trip to Israel April
8-24. We traveled from the Negev
desert in the south, all the way to the
Galilee and Golan in the north, visiting
sites that some of us have spent nine
years learning about at Hillel.
In every way, this trip was nothing
less than an absolutely life-changing
experience. Class members were excit-
ed to see all of the beautiful structures
that ancient Jews built, such as the
Western Wall and Masada.
We also engaged in thrilling activi-
ties, such as rappelling off cliffs, float-
ing in the Dead Sea and crawling
through tiny underground caves.
These active experiences also were
outstanding because they helped many
students conquer their fears with the
knowledge that nothing could be that
bad with all of the supportive students
and teachers by their sides.
Although the itinerary was noth-

ing short of fantastic, it was truly the
efforts of the excellent staff and the
students' positive attitudes that made
the trip as phenomenal as it was.
Hillel's trips to Israel always contain
a social action component. With the
help of Hillel and the Frankel Jewish
Academy in West Bloomfield, we were
able to collect two duffel bags filled
with books and markers to donate to
two schools in Mizpeh Ramon, a town
in the Negev.
The schools could not afford these
supplies for the students. Giving
back to the Israeli community was a
pleasure, considering Israel has given
so much more to us. We would like
to thank Hillel and Frankel for their
generosity; together, we made a big
difference.
