E
arlier this month, 19 com-
munity leaders embarked on
a Kindness Project nine-day
mission to Israel where they visited
Tel Aviv, Rana'ana, the Galilee and
Jerusalem.
The purpose of the trip — led by
Mark A. Lit, JCC executive director,
and Rabbi Tzvi Muller of the local Jean
and Theodore Weiss Partners in Torah
program, who also directs the Kindness
Project — was to inspire, educate and
empower each participant to become
"modern-day Solomons" (Kindness
Project leaders).
The Kindness Project, a Partners
in Torah and JCC initiative, facilitates
opportunities to enrich its participants'
hearts, minds and activities with
the values, wisdom and practices of
kindness in Jewish tradition. This is
reflected in its slogan: "Kindness: Love
it. Learn it. Live it:' Through its vari-
ous programs, the Kindness Project
reaches thousands of Metro Detroiters.
Mission-goers represented the JCC
and its arms (Berman Center, Shalom
Street, 2014 JCC Maccabi Games and
ArtsFest), Partners In Torah, the Anti-
Defamation League, BBYO, Federation's
Alliance for Jewish Education, Jewish
Hospice and Chaplaincy Network,
Partners in Torah Young Adult Division
and area synagogues.
Love It
Participants met with and learned
from kindness heroes such as Gilad
Harish of LaSova, soup kitchens and
homeless shelters; Myriam Mendilow

of Yad Lakashish, Lifeline for Seniors;
Joseph Gitler of Leket Israel, glean-
ing food for the hungry; Tzvika
Levi, father of Israel's Lone Soldiers
program; and Uri Lupliansky of Yad
Sarah, providing free medical equip-
ment for those in need.
The realization hit home that one
person seeing a need in his or her
community and the beauty of kindness
can make an enormous difference.
Learn It
Rabbi Muller led daily interactive
discussions based on Jewish texts in
which every participant gained and
shared insights, resulting in new self-
realizations, deep thinking and impas-
sioned exchanges.
Special guest lecturers Rabbi Yitzchak
Berkovits, dean of the Center for Jewish
Values, and Rabbi Israel M. Lau, former
chief rabbi of Israel, stirred the group
