avid Blatt didn't need many
words to describe the 23rd
annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational at Franklin
Hills Country Club in Farmington Hills.
"It couldn't have been better; said
Blatt, the executive director of the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation,
which organizes the invitational.
The weather was perfect for last
montlis event. And for the fourth consec-
utive year, the invitational was a sellout.
Blatt said 40 golfers played in the new
morning round and 165 played in the
traditional afternoon round.
Among the golfers were four from
the Wounded Warrior Project, all ser-
vicemen who were injured serving our
country. They were sponsored by the
Mandel Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio.
"It was great having them:' Blatt said.
A new wrinkle added to the invita-
tional went over well. Blatt said a few
hundred raffle tickets were sold for
tickets to the annual sponsors' dinner,
held the night before the invitational.
The awards presentations at the post-
golf dinner once again were emotional
and tinged with family pride.
Joe Torre, Major League Baseball's
executive vice president of base-
ball operations, received the Hank
Greenberg Lifetime Achievement Award
from Steve Greenberg, Hank's son.
The award recognizes a baseball Hall
of Fame member whose integrity and
dedication to baseball mirrors the same
traits shown by Hank Greenberg.
ESPN reporter Jeremy Schaap,
master of ceremonies for the evening,
presented the Dick Schaap Award for
Media Excellence named for his father
to Sports Illustrated senior writer Tom
Verducci.
The Barry Bremen Memorial
Inspiration Award was presented to Gift
of Life Bone Marrow Foundation stem
cell donor Bayla Hochheiser of Oak Park
by Adam Bremen, the award's first recip-
ient last year and Barry Bremen's son.
The award, named for the late "Great
Imposter," recognizes individuals who
have overcome monumental challenges
in their life.
The invitational is the major
fundraiser for the foundation, which
has raised more than $1 million to
help fight cancer since 1984. Hank
Greenberg died of cancer in 1986.
Among the raffle items up for grabs
this year were a spot in Michael Jordan's
basketball camp in California along
with airfare and accommodations, a
chance to throw out the ceremonial
first pitch before a Detroit Tigers game
at Comerica Park, and a golf foursome
with former Detroit Red Wings star
Tomas Holmstrom.
Blatt said next year's invitational
will be held June 9, 2014, once again at
Franklin Hills.
It will be the third straight year that
Franklin Hills will be the host after the
invitational's two-year stop at Oakland
Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.
B'nai B'rith Benefit
Another longtime benefit golf outing
held last month was a success.
Bobbie Levine, program director for
the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region, said
a good time was had by all" on a great
day weather-wise at the 31st annual
B'nai B'rith Golf Classic at Wabeek
Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.
Eighty-four golfers participated in the
event that benefits B'nai B'rith, BBYO
and Hillel chapters on state college
campuses.
Representatives from area AZA and
BBG youth chapters greeted golfers and
guests at the awards banquet.
Chad Weaver won a raffle for a free
cruise and David Lubin won a 50/50
raffle. Other raffle items were a family
membership at Wabeek, use of a suite at
the Palace of Auburn Hills and a $500
gift card to Art Van Furniture.
Auction items included a Wabeek
golf foursome, tickets to Tigers games,
a Miguel Cabrera autographed base-
ball, a helmet autographed by NFL star
Charles Woodson, framed autographed
jerseys of Steve Yzerman, Nicklas
Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk, and gift
certificates for dining, entertainment,
art work and jewelry.
There were 25 hole sponsors.
Classic co-chairs Michael Fishman and
Lubin were helped by several B'nai B'rith
volunteers. ❑
