It is time to take a test and learn how you shape up. Are you ready? Here are the questions. Answer the questions by scoring in the range of 4 to 0 — giving a 4 if you agree with the statement, ranging down to a 0 if you totally disagree. After you mark down the numbers, I will tell you how to tabu- late your score. Be sure not to peek at the analysis before you do the scoring! ❑ 1. I operate with a monthly budget, so I know what my monthly expenses are and what my monthly income is. ❑ 2. A nice bar/bat mitzvah party is a statement of love for how proud I am of my child. ❑ 3. I have a firm plan for retirement. ❑ 4. I would send my child to private school if it was important to his or her education and worry about how to pay for it later. ❑ 5. I'm concerned that I will not have sufficient financial resources to retire. ❑ 6. I have children over 21 and still provide them with support excluding tuition. ❑ 7. I exercise daily. ❑ 8. I drive a car that is less than three years old and the monthly payment is more than $399. ❑ 9. When I get the Jewish News, the first thing I look at is the obituaries. ❑ 10. I don't have any idea about ques- tions 1, 3 and 5 because my spouse takes care of that. Scoring The Quiz Now it is time to score. Total your score for questions 1, 3, 5 and 7 and multiply the total by 4 (maximum is 64). Total your score for questions 2, 4, 6 and 8 and multiply the total by 3 (maximum is 48). Ignore numbers 9 and 10. Subtract the even number tally from the odd number tally. If the number is negative, you're in big trouble finan- cially. If the number is 36 or greater, you have a good handle on your finances and priorities from the stand- point of financial stability — because you are likely giving due consideration to your future financial statement when making current decisions. From 27 downward to negative numbers — you need to focus more on your future. So what about question 9? Well, if you are a female older than 50, most likely you answered "4"to this question. It's just a sign of the times. When we were younger, we looked to engagements, then weddings, followed by births and then bar/bat mitzvahs. That's just how it goes. If you are past 50, you should be thinking about your responses to the other questions. And that brings me to question 10. If you answered "4" to this, you need to look in the mirror and ask yourself, "What have I been thinking? I have to look out for myself and make sure my spouse has it together:' Have you ever wondered how quiz- zes are created? The psychological foundation and underlying research that supports the questions asked and the conclusions drawn from the scor- ing? I can speak to that issue, but only for this quiz. The answer is nothing. I made it up as I went, created the scor- ing and the conclusions. So was this a waste of your time? I hope not. The questions are designed to make you think about your life and how you are going to proceed in the future. Death may be a certainty, but if we are fortunate and blessed with good health and a long life, we need to make sure we don't mess it up by failing to plan for our later years. ❑ Ken Gross is an attorney with Thav Gross and host of the Financial Crisis Talk Center show that airs weekly at 9 a.m. Saturdays on WDFN 1130 AM "The Fan" and 10:30 a.m. Sundays on MyTV20.
