Klezmer Shabbat 0 n June 14, Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township opened its annual Early Summer Shabbat series with a joyous Klezmer Shabbat. An enthusiastic crowd was treated to the music Temple Beth El celebrates summer with a lively concert and dancing. of Cliff Monear, Dan Maslanka and Ralph Katz and the voices of Rabbi Keren Alpert and her daughter Margot, who sang the Shabbat prayers to rousing klezmer tunes. In lieu of a sermon, Alpert coupled her two favorite hobbies: telling stories and sharing memorable music to craft a musical story about the creation of "Hava Nagila," with accompaniment from Katz on clari- net. At the end of the story, the congrega- tion burst into an enthusiastic rendition of "Hava Nagila." The evening ended with a dinner and Israeli dancing led by Dr. Neil Alexander of Ann Arbor. ❑ NT6100 Denny Brown of West Bloomfield, and Eileen and Richard Polk of Huntington Woods Graduation Gala une 13 marked the 10th anni- versary of Melton graduations for the thriving adult Jewish learning school. In its 10 years, more than 1,000 Detroiters have attended the two- year program. The event began with a dinner chaired by Carol Weintraub Fogel and Halley Uzansky and featured Gordon Zacks, son of founder Florence Melton. Linda Lee, Melton Advisory Committee chair, emceed the program. Honorary Melton degrees were given to Mark Dr. Neil Alexander of Ann Arbor leads the dancing. Sue Green of Southfield and Gail Posner of West Bloomfield Detroit's Melton Adult School celebrates its 10th anniversary. Lit, executive director of the Jewish Community Center, and Beverly Baker, president of the Morris and Beverly Baker Foundation. The event also recognized Detroit Melton for receiving the prestigious "Florence Melton Award" for excellence. Judy Mars Kupchan, CEO of the inter- national school, bestowed the award to Federation President Douglas Bloom on behalf of the Melton community.
