passionate musical puppet-masters pulling its audi-
ences' strings know exactly what they are doing.
Nate Ruess, 31, the pop-rock trio's lead singer and
lyricist, brings a lush, theatrical element to the group's
sound, with a dreamy, almost operatic tenor reminiscent of
Freddie Mercury and Electric Light Orchestra's Jeff Lynne.
Keyboardist (and Frankfort, Mich., native) Andrew Dost,
30, is a diverse multi-instrumentalist, mastering everything
from guitar and piano to flugelhorn and glockenspiel.
And Jack Antonoff, 27 — the Jewish member of the group
— grew up playing guitar with his dad, who introduced Jack
to his favorite band. "Our real connection, musically, is the
Beatles',' says Antonoff of his bandmates, who, like the famed
Liverpudlians and Queen, also are masters of the crescendo.
"But outside of the Beatles bond, we definitely have dif-
ferent tastes. I'm interested in the more physical side of
music, so the three of us complement each other really well.
Nate is about melody and lyrics and is very conceptual, and
Andrew and I add the bells and whistles — together, hope-
fully, we make it beautiful, passionate and compelling."
According to Billboard Magazine, the 2013 Grammy
Awards, a Chevrolet Super Bowl commercial, TV's Glee
(which adapted the group's pop-rock anthem "We Are
Young" for an episode that aired during the show's third
season) and legions of fans, that would be a definite "yes:'
The Grammy winners for Best New Artist and Song
of the Year (for "We Are Young") are rooted in the indie
scenes of their respective hometowns, where each was in
various bands throughout grammar school before coming
together and moving to New York City.
