U.S. Must Cut Spending,
Reduce The Tax Burden
U.S. Sen. Carl Levin's column, "The Case For Closing Tax
Loopholes" (June 27, page 41), can best be summed up with
one word — predictable. For many in Congress, there is
never a tax not to like.
Apple, a company that has done more to innovate and
grow the U.S. economy than all 535 members of Congress
could do in an eternity, is legally utilizing the tax code to
shield or reduce its corporate tax liability — the very tax
code that Sen. Levin, his colleagues and the vast bureaucracy
at the Treasury Department and the IRS have legislated,
codified and, arguably, convoluted over decades.
Levin cries foul that Apple "offshores" some of its profits
and thus "offloads" its tax burden onto small business and
individuals and those without the vast resources available to
companies like Apple to sort through the tangled web of our
tax codes.
Rather than blame Apple for utilizing the very laws in
which he had a hand in writing and authorizing, here is
a radical suggestion for Sen. Levin and his colleagues in
Congress: Take a page from Apple's playbook and create
something innovative, fresh and dynamic that will positively
contribute to the lives of the American people — simplify the
tax code for individuals and business, reduce tax rates and
overwhelming regulation and make the U.S. among the most
attractive places to do business again.
The U.S. economy would be unleashed to do what it does
best — expand and grow. In no time, those offshore dollars
would find its way back to these shores!

Radical Islamism Is
A Worldwide Threat
I am responding to the letter "Critic Of Islamism Is Not
Objective" (July 20, page 5). The writer states that Zudhi
Jasser does "not qualify as an objective observer of the
administration's policy or as a voice of the moderate Islamic
community." He justifies this by stating that Dr. Jasser sup-
ports Newt Gingrich and is "a favored commentator on Fox
News/Entertainment:'
Fox News, in a recent poll, was voted the most trusted
news station in the country. It shined a bright light on all the
scandals, including the Fast and Furious gun trafficking pro-
gram, Benghazi, the IRS and the NSA, at the time when the
other news organizations were essentially silent.
In addition, mentioned is the fact that Dr. Jasser is "an
active Republican:' So, because of these things, that means
he is not objective. This implies that anyone from the right
cannot be objective but, President Obama and, of course, the
writer are absolutely correct in their assessments.
Obviously, the writer is a Democrat. Does this mean
that, because of his party affiliation, he is the only one who
espouses an objective opinion? This would imply that any-
one who is a Republican is partisan and anyone who is a
Democrat is not.
Radical Islamism is a worldwide threat whether or not
the writer or Mr. Obama wish to acknowledge that. The
American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) is the only
Islamic organization in the United States, or perhaps in the
entire world, that advocates against it. Because of that, they
should be congratulated, not demeaned.

Things may be getting
better - but the
financial crisis was a
rude awakening for
many people. The "old days" are
gone and we now are in a new
environment. You need to think
about three generations when
you evaluate financial issues. If
you are middle aged (whatever
that is!) - you need to think about
your parent's finances. If they have
savings but their house or condo is
underwater, you need to take action
or upon their demise the bank will
have a claim for the shortfall that
will erode any inheritance. You also
need to think about your children's
finances. If something happens to
you, have you protected your estate
from your children's creditors?
Call us - we know the issues and
the solutions.

• In "HMC Celebrates Planting Of Anne Frank Sapling" (June
