Annette Meskin Keego Harbor IDF Soldiers Gain From Darchei Avot While in Israel this past fall with the Melton tour, I had the pleasure of visiting Darchei Avot ("Bridging The Gap:' June 20, page 1) when it was hosting Israeli pilots, support staff and one of the commanders from the Nevatim Air Force Base in the Negev. I had the privilege of addressing this group of about 80 Air Force personnel. It was a diverse group. Some men wore kippot. Other men did not. There were men and women, officers and their troops, learning together in a very crowded classroom. Since unity is one goal of Darchei Avot, I saw it achieved within their study session. It was an inspirational experience. What I tried to do was to convey to them that many Jews of all ages care about and actively support Israel and the IDF. Attending rallies and speeches to openly challenge anti-Israel lies, educating both Jews and non-Jews about Israel, financially supporting students so that they can visit Israel, and writing letters to the editors of local and national media in support of Israel were some of the specifics that I mentioned. My aim was to show that we care about them. I learned that after my talk there was discussion among the group. They had not realized that American Jewry cares about them and fights for them in our own way. Shortly after my visit, these pilots took part in Operation "Pillar of Defense" risking their lives. Hopefully, they went to their missions knowing that they were in our minds and hearts. Darchei Avot deserves our support. Barbara Goodman Huntington Woods More Help For Kids, Adults With ADHD In ("Kids And ADHD:' April 25, page 1), the inclusion of many different sup- ports will be so helpful to your readers who have a child who has this disorder. One support source which was not mentioned was CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD.) CHADD is a national, research based, nonprofit organization which gives support to families living with ADHD. The ADHD Parent Boot Camps I teach are based on CHADD's Parent to Parent program. The information is all research based and covers everything from diagnosis to raising teenagers with ADD/ADHD. CHADD has parent blogs and a website, so parents aren't alone in figuring out best strategies in supporting their child. A membership to CHADD is $53 per year and allows full access to its web- site, including articles, research, and bimonthly magazines. Brenda Mann Sylvan Lake Obama Doesn't Admit Islamic Terrorism Exists I certainly enjoyed the convoluted logic the June 20 letter "Critic Of Islamism Is Not Objective" (page 5). According to it, if you are a sup- porter of Newt Gingrich (which I am not) you can't possibly have a valid criticism of administration policies on terrorism. And also, if you are a "favored com- mentator" on Fox News Network you can't possibly be taken seriously — I guess that would also apply to [liber- als] Bob Beckel, Alan Colmes, et. al. Who would, according to the letter's author, be a "player" to be believed? Perhaps he believes we should be listening to "unbiased" trackers of ter- rorism like Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice. Can only Democrats and other sup- porters of Obama have "valid" views on his policies? Validity of any views on administration policies should be based upon the results of those poli- cies, such as in Libya and Egypt, where Islamist supporters of terrorism are now in power. How can our country adequately address global, Islamist terrorism if the administration refuses to admit that Islamic terrorism is at war with us or that it even exists? One last point, Zuhdi Jasser should be congratulated for his efforts to have Muslims separate the religious aspects of Islam from the dangerous political views. Sorry, I do not view Obama as Moses; nor do I view the Democrats as kohanim; nor do I view the liberal- progressive agenda as my Torah. Irving Ginsberg, Ph.D. Farmington Hills The Ethical, Environmental Need For Vegetarianism As a devoted subscriber and reader of the Jewish News, the June 20 issue had an article which touched my heart, and I hope many others as well. I have been an "ethical" vegetarian for at least 25 years, motivated by the many trucks which passed me on my ride to work on the expressway loaded with animals on the way to the slaugh- terhouse. The column "Why Jews Should Go Vegetarian Or Vegan" (page 42) showed the cruelty involved in the slaughter of animals. As a Jewish child growing up, I was told that our ani- mals are slaughtered in a humane way. It is now shown that this is not pos- sible in today's industrial approach to our food supply. Other living beings than ourselves are not inanimate objects. Aside from the moral issues, it makes ultimate sense for a sustainable planet to exam- ine our eating patterns. The produc- tion of meat is costly to our environ- ment. There are many area Jewish busi- nesses where daughters are working closely with their fathers. Since mod- ern Judaism promotes equality among the sexes, it seemed like a gross over- sight to me. Hopefully you will find a way to showcase these young women in future editions. enrich the lives of the men, women and children with disabilities in our community.
