or students who enter its
doors from around the world,
the new Lubavitch Yeshivah
International School for Chabad
Leadership is a dream come true in
so many ways. The state-of-the-art
45,000-square-foot Zekelman Campus
was also built with the latest in solar-
electric technology to save costs and
the planet — two good causes.
This is the first school in the area
to install a solar electric energy
system, while others are just con-
sidering the benefits with their new
construction. A turnkey 48.5 KW
photovoltaic system was installed,
and plans for interconnecting to the
DTE grid meter is scheduled for the
near future.
With the high-efficiency solar pan-
els offering the highest solar energy
production available, the school will
save more than $253,453 in utility
savings over the life of the system,
with an average monthly utility sav-
ings of $845 over system life of 20
years.
By installing the solar system, the
school will reduce greenhouse gas
emissions by 1,067 tons of carbon
dioxide over 25 years.
What does that mean? Over this
same 25-year period, that would
eliminate emissions from a small
car driven more than 3.6 million
miles, a medium-sized car driven
more than 1.9 million miles, an SUV
driven more than 1.3 million miles or
more than 2 million air miles. It's the
equivalent to planting 42,688 trees or
eliminating the CO2 caused by trash
and waste of 1,940 people.

"The Lubavitcher Rebbe, of blessed
memory, under whose leadership
this school was founded, was a
strong proponent of environmen-
tal stewardship:' said Lubavitch
Cheder Development Director Rabbi
Mendel Stein. "He believed that God
bestowed upon us plentiful resources
of energy starting with the sun, which
is freely available to us and much
easier to harness than other resourc-
es. He believed that harnessing this
energy as a fulfillment of God's com-
mand will provide long-term stability
for our country.
As an institution that embodies
these beliefs, we are proud to have
installed a full array of solar panels so
we can actually use one of God's mag-
nificent resources in a physical way:'
Stein added.
The 4-acre campus at 15151 W.
10 Mile Road in Oak Park opened in
September 2012, funded by a dona-
tion from philanthropists Alan and
Lori Zekelman, initiated in honor
of his parents — Harry and Wanda
Zekelman, who believed strongly in a
Jewish education.
Young men, ages 13-19, from 10
countries and 17 states attend the
school, which produces graduates
who receive an education immersed
in Chabad-Lubavitch teachings.
Many graduates become emissar-
ies that help the Jewish community
and others physically and spiritually
through outreach activities. Hundreds
of alumni are spread out around the
globe, providing their message of love
and wisdom and knowledge about the
Lubavitch movement.
