Foiling Iran's Goals

Preventing A Nuclear Iran

to prevent a nuclear Iran.

A nuclear Iran, he says, is not only threat-
ening to world security but also to the
world economy and Israel. Twenty-five
percent of the world's oil supply runs
through the Straits of Hormuz, with Iran
at its northern border. This is the only sea
passage that leads to open ocean waters
from the oil-rich Persian Gulf.
According to Feferman, diplomacy,
counter-intelligence and special measures,
sanctions and other economic pressures,
and military action are all methods to
achieving this peace-
keeping goal.
UANI has focused much effort into
economic sanctions and blockades, and
50 major companies have already agreed
to stop doing business in Iran, including
Fiat, Hyundai, GE and Edison. To increase
the number of companies devoted to
cutting of ties with Iran, Mark Wallace,
UANI CEO, writes to CEOs of other com-
panies currently doing business in Iran
to tell them to stop. He cites reputational
risks by asking a company if they want
to be providing money to a regime that
denies basic human rights to its people
and silences uprisings and protests with
violence.
"And when we ask that question loud
enough, and with your help, they decide
to leave Feferman said to the group gath-

UANI also has encouraged state legisla-
tures to pass contracting laws and divest-
ment laws. Contracting legislation means
that U.S. companies cannot enter business
with companies that do business in Iran,
too. Currently seven states have both
divestment and contracting legislation,
including Michigan.
The Iranian Business Registry, available
at UANI's website at www.
unitedagainstnucleariran.com, lists more
than 500 businesses currently doing
business with Iran, with options to send
letters to these businesses, members of
Congress and members of the press.
Warren Williams, 70, of Ann Arbor
says he will be perusing the website to
take advantage of some of the resources
offered. Ron Frisch, 72, of Ann Arbor will
do the same.
"I had been concerned about it for
some time, but I didn't think there was
anything I could do about it," Frisch
said. He didn't know about UANI, but is
pleased that the organization makes it
easier for citizen involvement.
Bernie Banet, 69, of Ann Arbor finds
Feferman's message very encouraging. He
likes that UANI is "devoted to the problem
without jumping to the military solution
as the only way to do it."
