Les Mis from page 56

to concentrate on subtext and facial
expressions while keeping the notes:'
Sheehan, an accomplished musi-
cian who played double bass in
the Cranbrook orchestra and jazz
band and with the Oakland Youth
Orchestra, is delighted to be perform-
ing in his first professional musical-
theater production. While he had act-
ing roles in three Cranbrook student
productions — Grease, Annie and
Legally Blonde — appearing in Les
Miserables is a special thrill.
"I've loved Les Mis forever; it's
my favorite show:' said the Berkley
resident, who will be attending the
University of Michigan Residential
College in the fall. "I've been listening
to the soundtrack since I was a baby;
my mom would play it for me. When I
heard about this, I jumped on it. I put
everything else aside, and I'm glad I
did; it's a lot of fun:'
Sheehan is a member of the ensem-
ble, portraying second-in-command
student revolutionary Combeferre, as
well as a police officer and a down-
trodden peasant.
The only drawback for Sheehan is
the ambitious turnaround time; the
schedule allows less than two months
between the first rehearsal and open-
ing night.
"We've gotten so much work done
in such a little amount of time; the
only disappointment is that it will be

over so quickly:' said Sheehan, who is
impressed with the concept created by
Carter, Spiro and the rest of the pro-
duction staff.
It differs in some ways from the
classic Broadway version, he said. "It's
not the same show, but everything you
love about it is still there. It will be an
amazing show for people who don't
know the story and also for those who
do:'
Spiro said the production is a re-
imagined, more impressionistic ver-
sion of the traditional show, focusing
on the theme of memory from the
perspective of protagonist Jean Valjean
as he reflects on his life.
"There is a heightened awareness of
the importance of memory and how
the decisions we make throughout life
affect others:' said Spiro, who upon
finishing law school will continue
to work in health-care management
while pursuing his passion for theater
on the side. "The sets and costumes
create a dream-like world:'
Because the entire show is per-
formed in song rather than spoken
dialogue, Spiro focused on choosing
the best vocal artists he could find for
the cast.
"We started by finding the best sing-
ers, and the talent is quite extraordi-
nary, a vocal tour de force said Spiro.
"I think people are going to be very
impressed:'
