Annual regatta on Lake St. Clair raises
funds to fight blood cancers.

Boats at the start of the regatta on Lake St. Clair

mat Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) hosted
its annual Early Bird/Leukemia Cup
Regatta May 18 to raise funds for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In 13 years, the
club has raised more than $500,000.
Rear Commodore Mark Schwartz said this year's
event was the most successful to date, raising nearly
$50,000 to fight blood cancers. Sailors from across
Metro Detroit raced their boats and solicited dona-
tions.
Crescent Sail Yacht Club and Lake Shore Sail Club
assisted GLYC in the management of four race cours-
es on Lake St. Clair. In addition to the race, there was

a silent auction, hot dog stand and refreshments, with
all proceeds donated to the cause.
Great Lakes Yacht Club was formed in 1952
by a group of Jewish sailors denied membership
elsewhere. While all are welcome, the club, with
its beautiful grounds, still is predominately Jewish,
and holds a Shabbat dinner on a fall Friday night
each year.
GLYC hosts the first large regatta of the season
and the final regatta of the season each year for the
Detroit Regional Yachting Association. It also holds
many firsts for the area, including the first woman
commodore and the first junior sailing program.
