Fun And Feast!

Greenberg golfers play 18, chow down, talk sports, aid charity.

p

OTPOURRI
It's quite remarkable, and
undoubtedly envied by numerous
other charitable organizations ... 23 years of
continuous events that leave many mutter-
ing about making sure they don't forget to
attend the next one.
This was the annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational held by the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation ... with
dinner, awards and festivities that always
seem to beg for more.
The latest, recently at Franklin Hills
Country Club, numbered about 200 golfers
and around 50 more for the banquet.
This year, after the 18 holes of golf, a
sumptuous all-you-can-eat-and-drink
barbecue preceded a very interesting and
highly enjoyable sports forum with former
Major League Baseball manager Joe Torre,
nationally noted sports writer Tom Verducci
and sportscaster Jeremy Schaap, filled with
baseball storytelling.
Tables were set up outside for the bar-
becue, many of them under a huge tent ...
Stations included barbecued chicken and
fish, grilled perch, corn-on-the-cob, kosher
salami, etc. ... another with salads, breads,
vegetables, turkey, cheeses, dressings galore,
etc. ... Desserts with ice cream sundaes, top-
pings, cookies and brownies ... Even kosher
meals by Quality Kosher Catering.
Strolling Around ... Billy Berris talking
about Loya Organic Kebab Cafe in West

Sari Cicurel with David and Hedy Blatt

Bloomfield ... Myron "Mynie"
Milgrom and Willie Stone talk-
ing secrets ... Seymour Brode
standing out wearing a bright
yellow sweater ... "Retired"
Hedy Blatt assisting her replace-
ment Sari Cicurel as director of
community relations ... Judy
Grossman looking the other
way at the ice cream bar ...
Executive Director David Blatt
thrilled at the attendance ... Dr.
Jordan Maier, medical director
of Karmanos' Weisberg Cancer Treatment
Center in Farmington Hills, and Howard
Gourwitz always with big smiles ... Erwin
"Itsy" Lieberman getting a sore neck turning
every way to say hello to so many folks.
Nature's weatherman co-operated with
perfect weather to cap off still another excel-
lent Greenberg event that will have many
making plans to attend on June 9, 2014
... plus already looking forward to this
fall's Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation's
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame
Induction Dinner, Monday, Oct. 21, at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
THE RUMOR HAD been spreading like
wildfire, and I wanted to find out for myself
how much truth was in it, so I went to one
of those Chinese restaurants named that
supposedly now charges for rice ... We
asked Cholada Chan, owner of the three
Shangri-la restaurants, West Bloomfield,
Farmington Hills and Detroit, if it were true.
"I've heard that, too. It is absurd" says
Cholada. "Serving rice free is automatic. We
certainly serve rice at no charge with any-
thing on the menu that it comes with. Such
talk might have been started by someone
who wanted extra portions or wanted rice
with something that didn't call for it. There
is a charge for this.
"Our dine-in only dinner special, for
example, every Monday through Thursday,

also includes soup, egg roll and
white or fried rice"
THE CLOSING of Deli
Unique West Bloomfield off
Orchard Lake Road, as of
Sunday, June 23 at 8 p.m.,
brings memories of when it was
opened following former owner
Matt Prentice's 1980 takeover
of the original Deli Unique in
Oak Park ... He was the count-
erman, a previous attendee
at the Culinary Institute of America, who
took over Northgate Delicatessen from Dick
Lichtman ... gave it the Deli Unique name
... possibly because of the hard-to-believe
gourmet-at-a-deli dishes it served ... and
became one of this region's most successful
restaurant owners.
BEFORE COMING HERE for his recent
concert at Temple Israel, former localite
pianist David Syme decided to concentrate
solely on the classics by noted composers
... No "Rhapsody in Blue" "Clair de Lune"
or "Root Beer Rag" ... Only classical rendi-
tions.
But all that changed after the brother of
Temple Beth El's Rabbi Daniel Syme and son
of Temple Israel's late Rabbi M. Robert Syme
told the audience that he had one more song
to play ... and asked what would they like
to hear? ... The audience yelled "Rhapsody
in Blue" as David smiled and again maneu-
vered his nimble fmgers through his great
George Gershwin rendition like few can ...
David's magnificent musical performances
are priceless.
His Temple Israel concert this year took
in Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. ... with
David's usual eyes shut in emotional feeling
of precise deftness.
He and wife, Suzanne, are now perma-
nent residents of Ireland ... Their home in
Houston, Texas, is up for sale ...His big Irish
fan, beautiful film star Maureen O'Hara,
made a switch, too, moving to become a

United States resident of Boise, Idaho.
David appears here yearly for the Temple
Israel Senior's Group as part of a six-week
annual visit to the U.S. for concerts nation-
wide ... He will be in this area again this
year on Tuesday, June 25, at the Grosse
Pointe War Memorial Auditorium.

OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT. ... Abe
goes to see his rabbi and says, "Rabbi,
something terrible is happening, and I have
to talk to you about it." ... The rabbi asks,
"What's wrong, Abe?" ... He replies, "My
wife is poisoning me!"
The rabbi is very surprised by this and
asks, "How can that be?" ... Abe then
pleads, "I'm telling you, I'm sure she's poi-
soning me. What should I do?"' ... The
rabbi then offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk
to her. I'll see what I can find out, and I'll let
you know"
A week later, the rabbi calls Abe and says,
"Well, I spoke to your wife. I spoke to her
on the phone for three hours. You want my
advice? ... Abe anxiously says, "Yes ..."
"Take the poison" says the rabbi.
