Small Acts,
Big Results

S

mall acts, when multiplied by mil-
lions of people, can transform the
world:' said Howard Zinn, a noted
American playwright and social activist.
He might have been speaking about Kyle
Peres, 13, who will be attending eighth
grade at West Hills Middle School in West
Bloomfield next fall. If millions of people
were to follow his example, endangered
animal species around the world would
rebound to healthy populations.
Kyle has a particular passion for turtles.
"I love turtles, and all my life I've wanted
to help them:' he said. So Kyle took action.

New Guide
For Estate
Executors

our father has just died unex-
pectedly, and you are the
executor of his estate. What do

you do?
Do you even know where all his assets
are? How about his liabilities, including all
the monthly bills he pays automatically?
Do you know how to access his computer
files?
Anyone tasked with settling an estate,
or anticipating being named as executor
of an estate, will benefit from attorney
Robert Kass' new book, The Executor's
Companion: A Practical Guide to Estate
Administration, co-written with Robert H.
Downie and Yuh Suhn Kim.
The book is a general guide to issues
that must be addressed in settling an
estate, though Kass says it is not intended
to be a substitute for a qualified estate
planning or probate attorney.
The guidebook provides other valuable
information for survivors as well. Kass
starts at the very beginning, with informa-
tion about organ donation and notifying

Last year, he raised $250 for the World
Wildlife Fund (WWF) to help save sea
turtles by organizing a school dodge ball
game and selling rubber bracelets to fellow
students.
Since he was 5, his parents, Michelle
and Edward Peres, along with brother,
Cameron, have been visiting Gumbo Limbo
in Boca Raton, Fla., a nature conservatory
that helps to rehabilitate injured sea turtles.
"I fell in love with the sea turtles:' says
Kyle, who owns a pet turtle of his own, a
yellow and black Mississippi map turtle he
calls Lightning. "Every year we go back:'
Kyle's compassion for animals extends
beyond turtles. Two years ago, after having
seen tigers at the zoo, Kyle began research-
ing their plight. Learning they were endan-
gered, he organized a fundraiser for the
WWF, selling bottle caps with toy plastic
animals on top.
For his March 9 bar mitzvah at Temple
Israel, Kyle asked for donations to WWF in
lieu of gifts.
"Whenever he has extra money, he's
looking to where he can donate it to help
animals:' said mom, Michelle.
Kyle is quick to say that helping animals
is not always about donating money. "We
can all do little things, like cleaning up
beaches:' he said.
If we all do little things, we can trans-
form the world.

people about a death. There's information
about securing assets, finding lost assets
and appraising various types of property.
Kass of Huntington Woods is an attorney
with Barris, Sott, Denn and Driker in
Detroit, specializing in estate planning and
administration.
The easy-to-read yet thorough guide
includes chapters on achieving peace and
harmony when settling an estate, passing
on digital assets, Social Security and vet-
eran's benefits and life insurance. There's
a detailed section on probate: what it is,
when it's necessary, how to avoid it and
how to go through it if you have to.
There's even a section on how to handle
a financial windfall that you might receive
as a beneficiary.
Scattered throughout the book are
case histories that illustrate some aspect
of estate settlement. Appendices include
reproductions of dozens of Michigan pro-
bate forms and a glossary of terms.
Attorneys and tax advisers also will find
this book a useful aid in organizing and
implementing estate administration duties
and in working with their clients.
The Executor's Companion is published
by Carob Tree Press LLC and is available
for $29.95 from Amazon.
