Volunteering With IDF
Was Fun And Fulfilling
We recently had the good fortune to
go to Israel as Volunteers for Israel vol-
unteers. This was not a vacation, but a
great adventure.
The adventure started with the group
meeting at Ben-Gurion Airport. After
processing our documents, the group
was divided and sent to various bases
throughout Israel. This was accom-
plished with rapidity and efficiency,
and within a very short time we were
on an air-conditioned bus to our base
in the Negev Desert, near the city of
Beersheva.
Our group consisted of nine men and
seven women, of which there were four
couples. At the airport, each group is
assigned a madrichah, who guides you
through your whole stay. There are not
enough positive adjectives to describe
how wonderful our madrichah was.
Upon arrival to the base we were
assigned sleeping quarters, given IDF
fatigues and a tour of the base. The
bathrooms were close and the showers
had plenty of hot water — what more
could one ask?
The morning consisted of breakfast
at 7:30 a.m., followed by a flag-raising
ceremony and a brief meeting with
the group for news and assignments.
Our work consisted of working in a
warehouse: checking and packing duffel
bags to make sure they were ready for
the soldiers, taking down and putting

NCJW Salute To Detroit
At Historical Museum
The National Council of Jewish
Women, Greater Detroit Section will
present "A Salute to Detroit" Sunday,
June 23, from 6:30-10 p.m. at the
newly renovated Detroit Historical
Museum. The event is a celebration
of the organization's Education
Assistance Program, which is 110
years old this year.
Guests will enjoy a strolling
dinner, dancing, a silent auction
and great company. All proceeds
from the event will benefit college
students.
NJCW's Education Assistance
Program provides interest-free loans
and grants to students needing
financial aid so they can continue
and complete their undergraduate,
graduate or professional studies.
NCJW works on the program
in conjunction with the Jewish
Educational Loan Service.
Tickets are $75 per person
with free parking adjacent to the
museum. Dress is casual. Guests are

up shelving units for storage, sorting
various parts and separating the inner
lining of helmets. We did some outside
work, which consisted of painting some
large metal slabs that protect the under-
side of tanks and working in the kitch-
en washing pots, chopping vegetables
and helping prepare food.
The work was not hard but accom-
plished with lots of laughs.
Volunteers for Israel-USA (VFI-USA)
is associated with Sar-El, a nonprofit
organization in Israel that administers
the program.
Volunteers typically spend two or
three weeks living and working along-
side Israelis at an army base or Israeli
Defense Forces warehouses. The pro-
gram offers a way to contribute to the
State of Israel in a very direct way.
