"Cities around Michigan, including Detroit, could use some of these same tech- nologies to improve water efficiency at home Snyder said. Monday, he said, was to be spent meeting with Israeli automotive com- panies specializing in safety systems, such as collision avoidance, inter- connectivity — allowing vehicles to "speak" to one another — and other high-tech software applications. He also visited General Motors Advanced Technical Center Israel in Herzliya, where he attended an auto- motive reception sponsored by the Michigan Israeli Business Bridge. "The governor is really focused on things Israel is really good at — tech- nology, automotive, life sciences as related to water and the environment, and defense industries and homeland security:' Hannan Lis said from Israel. "He wants to make Michigan one of Israel's leading trading partners. With Israel's can-do attitude and entrepreneurial spirit, Gov. Snyder believes Michigan can scale up those ideas with its infrastructure and great workforce and be a gateway for Israeli companies coming to North America." Kaufman said, "The governor and his team are really working hard to promote Michigan as a place for Israel companies to do business. The reception from Israel's business com- munity has been very, very positive!' Later in the week, Snyder was plan- ning to travel to Tel Aviv, Nazareth, Haifa and the Galilee region. The governor also was to participate in Tuesday night's celebration of Israel President Shimon Peres' 90th birth- day, which will include other lumi- naries such as former President Bill Clinton and Jewish American super- star Barbara Streisand. The event also serves as the opening event for the fifth annual Presidential Conference, "Facing Tomorrow 13," taking place at Hebrew University, which Snyder plans to attend. He will also be meet- ing with Israeli companies in the defense industry. Snyder was scheduled to visit Israeli universities and learn more about the country's early childhood education system and "bring those ideas back to Michigan!' Michigan's 2014 fiscal budget, signed by the governor last week, includes funding that will allow the state to provide more early childhood education opportunities for Michigan children. He also plans to discuss technology transfers with Israeli uni- versities as well as how to best build a technology base. Michigan Gateway "Our main focus is to create jobs," Snyder said. "Michigan is a great gateway, in particular the Detroit area. We have a very strong Jewish community. We will be delivering the message that Michigan is more business-friendly than ever." According to the governor's office, Israel is the only country with free trade agreements with both the United States and the European com- munity, which would allow Israel to act as a bridge between the United States and Europe, and Michigan is uniquely situated for growth in Israel. Last year, Michigan companies exported $117 million in goods and materials to Israel, making it the 19th highest state in the U.S. for exports to Israel, and Michigan ranks 15th among states for imports from the country. "Michigan has a lot of common ground with Israel," Snyder said, "particularly with startup and tech- nology companies!" Snyder said that he hoped discus- sions with the Israeli government could lead to later trade agreements with the state. "Israel is a startup, high-tech nation, but its marketplace is rela- tively small," he said. "One of the best markets for it is in the United States, and Michigan can be that gateway for Israeli businesses!' ❑ Story Development Editor Keri Guten Cohen contributed to this report.
