Grab a pressure gauge from the gas station, and don't forget your spare tire — make sure it's in good condition! • Change the oil if it's time, and factor your road trip miles into the equation. (Mufflers and More is a great place for a quick and thorough oil change!!) • Fluids! You wouldn't let your kids get dehydrated during summer fun, and you shouldn't let your car, either. Along with oil, top off your car's fluids. Washer fluid: topped off to clear your sightline of pollen bursts and insect goo. And, have a look at your coolant (air conditioner), brake and transmission fluid levels. • Eyeball your engine for wear-and-tear. Does anything look frail? Check the radiator cap for cracks. If it's more than five years old, you might want to replace it as a preventative measure. • Look at your wiper blades, making sure they fully connect to your windshield. If spotty, replace. • Clear out anything you don't need before packing the car.A heavier car means more money at the pump (and less spending cash on the road). • Reserve space for an emergency kit: a flashlight, flares, a blanket, first aid kit, a water jug and jumper cables. Hopefully you'll never need it, but in a bind, you'll be glad it's there. DURING YOUR TRIP: • Check your oil when you fill up. If low, top it off. • When you gas up, take the time to clean your windshield of dead insects. Unexpected cloudbursts can result in harrowing seconds of lost visibility as your wipers clear smears. POST TRIP: • Go through your pre-trip checklist again to prepare for your return to everyday use. This way, if a spontaneous road trip appears, you are ready to hear the call of the open road! • Remember, life is not about the destination but the journey. Get there safely, happily and without any roadside stumbles! Kenny Walters, a Temple Israel member, owns award-winning Mufflers and More 490 N.
