amp Tamarack-Brighton's legacy
has long been felt throughout
Tamarack Camps, but during
Tamarack Family Fun Day on June 23, that
legacy will be made official and the tradi-
tions and history of that former beloved
campground will be passed down to
future Tamarack campers for years to
come.
During a special dedication ceremony at
Tamarack Family Fun Day at Camp Maas
in Ortonville, the agency will officially
dedicate the camp's "Junior Side" villages as
"Brighton Villages:'
Located on Blaine Lake in Brighton,
Camp Tamarack-Brighton was the Fresh
Air Society's longest-serving residential
camp, operating from 1927-1993. The prop-
erty included four dorms, two villages, din-
ing and recreational halls, a pine forest and
centralized flagpole, where the entire camp
congregated. Brighton lacked many of the
resources that Tamarack programs enjoy
today and largely relied on the creativity
and energy of the staff to give children
unforgettable experiences.
Brighton's legacy is in its traditions;
many programs started there remain an
integral part of the Tamarack experience
today — Circus Day, the Maccabiah Games
(Color Wars), the Swamp Walk (previously
referred to as Dinoland), eating meals
together in the dining hall and camp-wide
song sessions.
Both the Ortonville and Brighton sites
operated together for more than four
decades until Brighton closed in 1993.
While this marked the end of an era in
Tamarack's history, Brighton alumni
can forever say that they were part of
Tamarack's beginnings.

"For many

alumni, the summers at
Brighton represent some of the most spe-
cial times of our lives:' said Danny Klein,
a former Brighton camper and staff mem-
ber, who currently serves on Tamarack's
executive committee. "Through the leader-
ship of great directors and long-standing
traditions, we learned how to take care of
children while growing up ourselves. The
lessons we learned benefit us to this day."
Brighton was a nurturing community for
elementary school-age children, so the ded-
ication of Shiffman, Applebaum, Fishman
and DeRoy villages, which house Camp
Maas' youngest campers, is a fitting tribute.
"We are thrilled to be able to dedicate
our youngest villages as 'Brighton Villages,;'
said Michael Lippitt, Tamarack's president.
"Brighton still resonates very strongly with
our alumni and is a legacy for the entire
Tamarack family as we preserve important
traditions and grow into our future."
Former Brighton directors, staff and
campers Lenny Newman, Susie Zaks
and Danny Klein as well as Camp Maas
Director Lee Trepeck will lead the cer-
emony, which will take place promptly at
10:30 a.m. Family Fun Day is open to the
community.
