Mercedes-Benz

lorine Mark, president and CEO
of the Weight Watchers Group
in Farmington Hills, has been
named the new president of the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit and will be installed at its annu-
al meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, June 17, at
the JCC in West Bloomfield. The event
is open to the public.
The meeting
will include the
announcement of the
new JCC board and
officers, as well as
the Susan Alterman
Award to Ilana
Glazier and the Irwin
I Alterman
Lifetime
Florine Mark
Achievement Award
to Madge and Bill Berman.
A native of Detroit, Mark grew up in
a poor but loving family who, she says,
taught her courage, perseverance and
faith, which gave her the confidence
to build a business recognized as the
largest franchisee of Weight Watchers
International.
Mark has served on the boards of
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, the United Jewish Foundation
of Metropolitan Detroit and the Jewish

etro Detroit native Dr. Conrad

Giles was named World
ORT's new deputy president
at a meeting in London last week, dur-
ing which he said American philanthro-
pists cannot use recession as an excuse
not to give money.
Speaking at the end of World ORT's
Board of Representatives meeting,
Giles said there had been sufficient
improvement in the economy for his
fellow Americans to live up to their
responsibilities.
"If you want a reason not to give, you
can always find it:' Giles said. "But I
no longer believe that American Jewry
can hide behind a recession to suggest
that their giving has to be modified.
As a result of a resoundingly vibrant
market and a marked recovery in so
many sectors of our economy, there's no
reason that we cannot achieve increased
amounts of giving; we have the dollars,
we have now got to understand that is
our responsibility:'
Giles' long and illustrious record of
commitment to the American Jewish
community includes being national

vice-chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal
and president of the
Council of Jewish
Federations; he was
also part of the team
that put them together
to form United Jewish
World ORT
Communities, fore-
Deputy
runner of today's
President Dr.
Jewish Federations
Conrad Giles
of North America. In
in London last
addition, he was chair-
week
man of the Jewish
Council for Public Affairs and has sat at
the top tables of the JDC and JAFI.
His relationship with ORT stretches
back to his presidency of Detroit's Men's
ORT chapter in the late 1970s. Since
2007, he has been assisting World ORT's
fundraising team in the United States by
acting as a liaison with the Federation
system. He was confirmed as the orga-
nization's deputy president at last week's
meeting of the board of representatives,
an annual gathering of top lay leaders
that provides a forum for the discussion
of major policy items.
