frontlines Everything To Fear Plus Fear Itself p resident Franklin D. Roosevelt reminded us in his first inaugural address, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself' Well, I do not know how he would have revised that statement if he had been aware of some of the many fears that can plague us. With the help of my friend Ilene Miles, I have decided to share with you some of the pho- bias that are out there; have your mental health doctor's number ready. For all those who are vegetar- ians or who hate riddles about fowl crossing the road, your fear of chick- ens is called alektorophobia. You may be in denial about aging or perhaps you have reason to fear mirrors as you bout catoptrophobia. When you are at a party and simply refuse to dance, your excuse to your spouse or significant other may be cho- rophobia, a fear of dancing. There have been many jokes made about fear of clowns — how can some- one whose job is to be funny instill fear? — and yet there it is, and it is known as coulrophobia. The post offices are in trouble financially, blamed on the emergence of emails; the officials have not given much thought to the fact that there are folks out there suf- fering from graphophobia, a fear of handwriting. The next time you are about to battle with some- one about eating all the vegetables on the plate, keep in mind that it may not be a matter of taste; some have intense lachanophobia, a fear of vegetables. I now have a new excuse. Instead of being "old fash- ioned" or refusing to come into the current century (which includes a strong aversion to electronic gadgets), I now claim to be neophobic, having a fear of new things. Those who maintain superstitions are well aware of the dreaded 13. You may have some friends a bit more fearful earlier on the numeric scale. They are octophobes; they have a fear of the number eight. In-laws are always getting a bad rap, and I think that this "fear" is really a way to continue that pejora- tive view. Give me a break! One just has to be sensible to have selachophobia, a fear of sharks. Hey, are you not reading the papers at all? It is more than Jaws; it is really hap- pening with frightening recurrence.
