Help Replace Band
Instruments At Detroit School
This past February, the American String
Quartet completed two weeks of educa-
tional visits and master classes for the
Chamber Music Society of Detroit in
schools throughout Metro Detroit. The
members of the quartet were particularly
moved by their experience at Munger
Elementary, a school in the economically
disadvantaged southwest Detroit commu-
nity, where students face poverty, crime
and other challenges in their neighbor-
hood. But Munger Elementary itself is a
safe haven for these students, offering a
place of learning, food and community.
Unfortunately, shortly after the quartet's
visit, almost 40 band instruments were
stolen during a break-in at the school.
Although the culprit has been caught, the
instruments have not been recovered. Each
instrument stolen represents a child that
can no longer be involved in band.
The Chamber Music Society of Detroit
is trying to help Munger Elementary
by seeking donated instruments for the
school. If you can help, contact Kelle
Vela, director of community engagement
at the Chamber Music Society of
Detroit, at (248) 985-0065 or kelle.vela@
chambermusicdetroit.org .

"There's no age limit. We're hoping to

grads to experienced entrepreneurs, any-
one who wants to be a part of an urban
retail environment:' said Nick Gorga, co-
founder of Hatch Detroit. And this year,
we're kicking it up a notch by asking appli-
cants to submit supporting visuals to help
illustrate their business concept:'
