Visit JNonline.us May 23 • 2013 lexander Thomas Ornstein, a retired state of Michigan worker's compensation magistrate and longtime leader in Jewish causes, died May 14, 2013. He was 68. Mr. Ornstein was known widely for his community leadership roles, but those who know him best will most remember his abiding care and concern for others. He rose through the ranks of B'nai B'rith, serving in every leadership role — includ- ing president — at the lodge, regional and district levels. He also served as an international vice president of B'nai B'rith. He was chairman of the board of directors of Hillel of Metropolitan Alexander Detroit. Most recently, he was president of the Men's Club at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield, where he was a longtime member. He had a pas- sion for learning, for years study- ing Jewish texts with rabbis and attending mini medical school at the University of Michigan. A graduate of Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and the Detroit College of Law, Mr. Ornstein special- ized in worker's compensation and Social Security law. He practiced in Detroit, Pontiac and Southfield and was an attorney for Teamsters Local #334. In 2004, former Gov. Jennifer Granholm appointed him as a state magistrate judge. Prior to that, he was chairman of the worker's compensation section of the State Bar of Michigan and was editor of the section newsletter. Before becoming a lawyer, Mr. Ornstein was a counselor for the blind. He was an accomplished flut- ist and enjoyed playing chess and bridge, a game that brought him together with his late wife, Harriet. He had a soft spot for dogs. Mr. Ornstein was most proud of being a father to Charles and Deborah. He delighted that his daughter chose a career in Jewish communal service and they were inseparable companions, particularly in recent months. He also eagerly anticipated and read all of his son's news- paper articles and delight- ed in wearing clothes with the colors of his son's alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, and Ornstein T-shirts with the names of his son's newspapers. Most recently, even as his health declined, he looked forward to daily phone calls from his grandsons Miles and Jude. Mr. Ornstein was a caregiver for his wife of 42 years, Harriet, who died in January. He was a loving father-in-law to Shari Ornstein, beloved sister to Pauline Woll, uncle to Peter (and Dr. Rachel) Woll, Jessica Woll (Donald Stewart), and Allison Woll (Dr. Harry Parr) and close friend to many. Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Donations in Mr. Ornstein's memory may be made to B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Council, to the Men's Club of Congregation Shaarey Zedek or to a charity of one's choice.
