he 2013 Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit
Lifetime Achievement and
Young Leadership Awards will be pre-
sented at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, May 30,
at the Berman Center at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
Lifetime Achievment Award win-
ners include Ronald B. Charfoos, who
has spent much of his life investing his
time, energy and resources to make the
world a better place. He has assumed
leadership positions with Federation,
the United Jewish Foundation and part-
ner agencies, guided by his belief that
we must all work together to achieve
shared goals.
Charfoos has left his mark on this
community and on the communal
organizations he has been involved in,
including Tamarack Camps, Federation
and Yad Ezra.
Barbara and Irving Nusbaum find
joy in reaching out to those in need,
helping in whatever way they can. They
are true role models whose sensitivity
and kindness inspire others. For them,
their greatest pleasure comes from giv-
ing, whether to individuals, families or
organizations.
In particular, they worked tirelessly
on behalf of the New Americans (Jews
from the former Soviet Union), help-
ing them with jobs, engaging them in
Jewish rituals and raising funds for
Operation Exodus.
Following in the tradition of their
parents, they have supported numerous
organizations including JARC, Jewish
Family Service/Resettlement Service
and Bar Ilan University, to mention just
a few.
Young Leadership Awards will go
to Ilana Liss, a community activist
who has dedicated countless hours to
Federation and its Young Adult Division
(the predecessor to NEXTGen). Liss
is known as a woman who sets clear
goals, leads by example and engages
others in the important work of the
community.
She has served as president of the
Young Adult Division, a member of
the Federation Executive Committee
and co-chair of the YAD Liaison and
Leadership Development Committee.
She will receive the Mark Family
Award.
Amy Shefman will receive the
Sylvia Simon Greenberg Award. She is

nity and about Federation's Women's
Department, in particular. Since 2007,
she has assumed many leadership
roles in the department, working to
nurture and educate others. Through
her thoughtful approach to committee
work, she has earned the respect of her
co-workers, many twice her age.
Above all, she is a strong solicitor for
Federation's Annual Campaign, always a
willing participant in fundraising activi-
ties. Shefman is a vice president of the
Women's Department, co-chair of Food
for Thought and past co-chair of the
Community Connections Program.
David Kramer will receive the Frank
A. Wetsman Award. He is driven by
a strong need to "give back" to the
community and has a keen apprecia-
tion for how Federation, its partner
agencies and other organizations help
and empower people to succeed. He
consistently demonstrates both concern
for vulnerable populations and a true
desire to preserve and enhance the ser-
vices critical to so many.
His many leadership roles include
chair of Orchards Children Services,
past president of the Young Adult
Division and board member of both
the Jewish Federation and the United
Jewish Foundation.
